Adtran has introduced 400 Gbps-port edge routing appliances enabling 'terabit-class' network capacity for aggregated 10G to 400G links. The new additions to Adtran's edge routing portfolio combine compact physical profiles catered to in-cabinet space constraints with optional support for coherent pluggable optics (ZR/ZR+), via the Adtran FSP 3000 IP open line system (OLS), to help scale capacity and amplify aggregated data links.

The UAE's Sharjah Government announced that local authorities responded to an incident on 30 March involving the targeting of the Thuraya Communications administrative building in the central region by a drone launched from Iran. AAC Clyde, Spire Global launch Glasgow-built satellites with UK, European agency support

Three satellites built in Scotland have launched on SpaceX's Transporter-16 launch vehicle, after receiving UK Space Agency (UKSA) funding via the European Space Agency's ARTES Pioneer Programme. Two of the satellites were developed by Glasgow-based AAC Clyde Space, while the other satellite was launched by space economy and data specialist Spire Global.

Peru exceeds 3,800 5G antennas

Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced that the deployment of 5G infrastructure has further accelerated in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 3,889 antennas with the technology, up from just 400 in 2021. The rollout is expected to further intensify this year following the award of 5G-compatible frequencies in the 3.5 GHz band to the operators Claro (America Movil), IntegraTel (Movistar Peru), Entel and Bitel (Viettel) at the end of last year.

Russian company Eltex announced the start of commercial production of the MES5320-24 switch for data centres. In data centres, it can be used as the Top-of-Rack or End-of-Row solution. The switch also is suitable for corporate network infrastructure at large companies. Speeds up to 25 Gbps are possible for traffic aggregation and up to 100 Gbps on a core network.

Ericsson increases share of O2 UK RAN contract with 5-year extension

Ericsson announced a new contract with UK operator Virgin Media O2 to become its primary radio access network (RAN) supplier. The five-year contract reneweal sees Ericsson provide the majority of the radio network under O2's latest Mobile Transformation Plan, bringing Ericsson "several hundred million euros" over the life of the contract, the Swedish supplier said. Nokia confirmed that it also secured a contract extension with O2 UK.

Italtel boosts ship-to-port connectivity for Costa Cruises fleet

Italian ICT and network specialist Italtel has landed a contract to strengthen communications between ships and ports for Costa Cruises, improving the reliability of network connectivity during port calls across the company's fleet. Italtel worked with Cisco to deliver a wireless system that allows continuous, secure and low-latency data exchanges between onboard and onshore infrastructure, helping cruise operators to manage check-in and other operations for thousands of passengers within tight timeframes.

Ekinops agrees MoU with European carrier, teeing up potential WDM optical procurement

Ekinops announced a preliminary deal with a leading European telecom operator to supply optical transport equipment. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) envisages a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) deployment to power the unnamed client's nationwide high-speed optical network. Commercial discussions with the customer are ongoing and could result in a framework contract in the coming months to guide future procurement, Ekinops added.

MTN Ghana restores services after disruption in parts of Greater Accra

Ghana's National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced to the general public and all consumers that MTN services have been fully restored in affected parts of the Greater Accra Region after disruption on 28 March. A network incident affected 57 2G sites, 57 3G sites and 57 4G sites, as well as fixed fibre broadband services in some areas. The affected enclaves included Lister Hospital, Klagon, Baatsona and Trassaco.

VodafoneZiggo cuts energy use in 2025 with mobile network, data centre upgrades

VodafoneZiggo said it took further steps in 2025 to reduce its energy usage, with savings of several GWh per year. The most important measures were in the mobile network, data centres and retail outlets, including the use of software to optimise infrastructure efficiency.
