Nexfibre announces expansion plans in Bradford, Crawley

Nexfibre announced a plan to invest almost GBP 10 million in Bradford, bringing its wholesale FTTP network to part of the city. Up to 61,000 properties will be covered, according to a report in the Telegraph and Argus paper. The project includes upgrades for existing Virgin Media customers in the area to full-fibre connectivity. Nexfibre is a joint venture of Virgin Media O2, Telefonica and InfraVia Capital.

O2 rolls out standalone 5G service in East Sussex

Virgin Media O2 has switched on its 5G Standalone footprint in several urban centres and hundreds of rural villages in East Sussex in southern England. The O2 5G+ rollout covers more than 830,000 urban residents, including East Sussex's biggest coastal city, Brighton and Hove, as well as several key towns in the area, including Peacehaven, Hastings, Lewes, Eastbourne, Seaford and Rye.

UK operator ITS announced the launch of its latest business-grade connectivity service, FibreLight Plus. This builds on the existing FibreLight service to add Enhanced Business Care, for 24/7/365 monitoring and a six-hour target fix service level agreement, and SecureEdge, a machine learning-based system from Cisco to ward off DDoS attacks. The two VAS are 20 percent cheaper than their list prices when bought bundled in the new package with an internet connection.

The UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has confirmed plans to migrate all users on the BT Openreach public-switched telephone network (PSTN) to digital phone lines by early 2027. Virgin Media is promoting its UHD channel over the Easter holidays, giving its TV subscribers free access from 28 March to 12 April. The Virgin TV Ultra HD channel will showcase family-friendly movies, rock and roll gigs and a range of documentaries, all advert-free. UK operator EE is bringing AI-powered content discovery tool Smart Search to its hybrid pay-TV service EE TV. Smart Search's natural language processing engine is able to retrieve content by searching for general themes, moods, plot elements, or even key lines from a show or film, EE said. Results from Smart Search span EE TV's integrated apps and channels list, producing a seamless experience across live and on-demand sources.

CityFibre to launch 8.5 Gbps wholesale service on 21 April

UK wholesale operator CityFibre has launched a new 8.5 Gbps product across its network, raising its top speed from a previous maximum of 5.5 Gbps. The new speed is the result of the rollout of XGS-PON technology across CityFibre's footprint, which currently reaches over 4.7 million premises. Partner ISPs can access the 8.5 Gbps wholesale service from 21 April.

Ericsson increases share of O2 UK RAN contract with 5-year extension

Ericsson announced a new contract with UK operator Virgin Media O2 to become its primary radio access network (RAN) supplier. The five-year contract reneweal sees Ericsson provide the majority of the radio network under O2's latest Mobile Transformation Plan, bringing Ericsson "several hundred million euros" over the life of the contract, the Swedish supplier said. Nokia confirmed that it also secured a contract extension with O2 UK.

UK fines Apple subsidiary over Russia sanctions breach

The UK government has imposed a GBP 390,000 penalty on Apple Distribution International for breaching financial sanctions related to Russia, following payments made in 2022 to a company linked to a sanctioned entity. The penalty was issued by the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI), which concluded that Apple Distribution International (ADI) had, on the balance of probabilities, violated UK sanctions regulations. Kcom confirms shareholders considering sale

UK regional operator Kcom confirmed its owners are considering a sale of the company or its assets. The note was included in its annual regulatory statement submitted to the telecoms regulator Ofcom. Kcom said it renegotiated its capital structure with the shareholders and its lenders in February.

Welsh govt ABC broadband grant scheme help 1,000 properties

The Welsh government's relaunched 'Access Broadband Cymru' (ABC) grant scheme has helped to improve broadband connectivity for 1,000 rural premises across Wales. The scheme provides grants of up to GBP 800 per premise, with grants covering both equipment and installation costs. AWS wins 10-year hyperscaler cloud services contract with HMRC

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has won a major hyperscaler cloud services contract from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in the UK. The contract is worth GBP 472.8 million (including VAT) and will support the migration of HMRS services to the public cloud. It will run for seven years initially from 14 April 2026 to 13 April 2033, with options to extend by an extra three years to 13 April 2036.

This offer is available until 23.59 hours on 06 May 2026.
