South African fixed line operator Telkom has launched LIT, a streaming service giving on-demand access to films, serials, online video and music. Telkom has introduced LIT Video and LIT Music, offering zero-rated video and music streaming for customers of its FreeMe service from 2GB upwards. LIT Video and LIT Music will be available from 01 September.
Telkom also announced the imminent launch LIT TV, offering ADSL, fibre and LTE broadband customers the Telkom LIT TVC 100 media box, so they can turn their television set into a smart TV, with ready-loaded content channels. LIT TV will be launched in September with its summer campaign.
Telkom Consumer CEO Attila Vitai said the company aims to take the lead in the data market and offer a compelling entertainment service. Vital said Telkom has partnered with the most popular content providers to give its customers unlimited access to viewing whenever they want, wherever they are. For LIT Video, Telkom has partnered with Showmax, Netflix, YouTube and Google Play.
For Lit Music, Telkom has partnered with Google Play Music, Apple Music and Simfy Africa. This means that when customers stream content from these sites, internet usage will not be deducted from their FreeMe data bundle. Although subscription costs for content providers are not included, they can be deducted directly from the customers' Telkom account through its reverse carrier billing option with certain content providers.
LIT TV includes a media streaming box and is designed for large screen TVs. The Android TV device allows consumers to customise their TV viewing. The current content partners for LIT TV are ShowMax, YouTube, DSTV and Google Play Store.
Devices running on Android TV have Chromecast built in so you one can direct one's favourite entertainment apps to one's television. Telkom's LIT TVC 100 media box is Google-certified and approved by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa.
