Orange presents zero-power IoT devices, new smartphones, 5G demos at MWC

Orange is present at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) event with both virtual and physical stands, enabling participants to take part in a dozen demonstrations of the operator’s latest network developments, as well as new hardware and services. In the IoT space, various prototypes of "000Devices" will be on display, showing how the logistics sector can benefit from these connected trackers that can self-power using light energy. "000Devices" use no additional waves or infrastructure to communicate, by detecting for example a connected smartphone that serves as a gateway. Among them, Orange will present models developed by Infineon Technologies, which can be reprogrammed by a smartphone via NFC.

The majority of the demonstrations will be dedicated to 5G use cases, in areas including e-health, AR (Augmented Reality) gaming, Industry 4.0, transport, and interaction with 3D-rendered images. Among them, the operator will show how network slicing can isolate confidential data from generic web traffic to guarantee end-to-end privacy. In an online e-health consultation, the implementation of two slices from the patient's smartphone will be used to transport body metrics collected by sensors to a doctor, in what the operator described as a first in Europe.

The company is also presenting other collaborations with industry partners. These include a project to create a complete IoT SAFE-compliant offering, which will collect data via the Live Objects management platform provided by Orange Business Services.

Looking at handsets, the operator is showcasing the "Neva leaf" smartphone, partly made of recycled plastic and with a modular design that enables owners to replace the battery or the screen themselves. In the EMEA region, a new arrival is going on sale this month offering customers new financing options. Called "Nola fun", the device can be locked and unlocked based on the status of the owner's account, thanks to capabilities developed by Transsion.
