T-Mobile leads Polish fixed and mobile internet speeds in 2025 - Speedtest.pl

T-Mobile Poland supplied the fastest fixed broadband, mobile internet and 5G speeds the country in 2025, according to a study from Speedtest.pl. Orange Poland provided the quickest service on FTTH networks.

Big tech companies will not face any new regulations in the EU under the proposed Digital Networks Act, people with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Despite a push from telecom operators to force large internet groups to contribute to the costs of networks and face the same rules as other communication service providers, the EU is not expected to add to the digital regulation already imposed on big tech in recent years when it unveils the draft DNA later this month, the report said.

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has announced its service portfolio and fees for 2026, detailing changes that affect peering capacity and the bandwidth included with membership. Under the new portfolio, members using 100 GE port access networks will be able to consume 10 Gbps of peering on a 100 GE port. LINX has also increased the amount of service bandwidth included in the monthly membership fee from 2 Gbps to 4 Gbps on a 10 GE port.

UK regional operators Truespeed and Freedom Fibre are in talks on a possible merger, Sky News reported. Negotiations between the two companies and their respective shareholders are underway, according to unnamed sources but it was unclear whether they were close to reaching an agreement. If successfully concluded, the merger would create a network with access to more than 400,000 premises.

The government of Peru's central Ancash region has announced the launch of a public connectivity scheme to connect 817 public institutions in 481 localities to fibre. The USD 122 million project awarded to YOFC Peru included installing over 1,900 km of fibre-optic cables to ensure educational institutions, health facilities, police stations and other municipal buildings could access connectivity services, benefiting families, students, teachers and public servants alike.

Vodafone Albania is updating its GigaFibra packages for business customers, enhancing speeds and integrating security features. The GigaFibra Prime package now includes DDoS Protect Basic at no extra cost. GigaFibra Pro has been renamed GigaFibra Static, and GigaFibra Prime has become GigaFibra Protect. Current customers can keep their existing plans if they choose not to switch to the new portfolio when renewing their contracts. Finnish police suspect aggravated criminal damage against Elisa cable in December incident

Finnish police say that the National Bureau of Investigation (Keskusrikospoliisi) seized the Fitburg cargo ship on 07 January. The vessel was suspected of damaging a submarine telecommunications cable belonging to Elisa in the Baltic Sea on 31 December. At this stage, the police are investigating the incident as aggravated criminal damage, attempted aggravated criminal damage, and aggravated interference with telecommunications.

Canal Plus acquires GVA's Canalbox fibre business in Togo

Canal Plus will take control of Group Vivendi Africa's (GVA) Canalbox fibre business in Togo, TogoFirst reported citing approval by the Togolese government on 31 December 2025. This change in Canalbox's ownership structure follows the restructuring of Vivendi Group, which decided in December 2024 to split into several independent entities.

MuniNet, a municipal fibre internet provider responsible for infrastructure in western Kentucky, has adopted Ekinops' 400G coherent optical transport to support the roll out of network upgrades. Ekinops said this deployment would ramp up capacity in MuniNet's existing fibre footprint, which supplies wholesale 5G backhaul and cloud connectivity services as well as high-speed broadband. Arelion restores cable between Latvia and Lithuania

Lithuanian telecommunications regulator RRT said that connectivity over a fibre-optic line connecting the city of Liepaja in Latvia and the town of Sventoji in Lithuania has been restored and is stable. This follows an incident registered on 04 January. The subsea cable belonging to Arelion was damaged, but part of its fibres were unaffected.

FINLAND 7 JAN

Traficom finds no major deficiencies in ship suspected of damaging Elisa cable

Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom said it has completed a port state control inspection of the cargo ship Fitburg, which is suspected of being responsible for damaging Elisa's telecommunication cable in the Gulf of Finland on 31 December. Finnish police are investigating the incident. Traficom said its inspection found ten minor deficiencies that do not endanger the safety of the ship or its crew.

GTD first to launch Wi Fi 7 in Chile with Amazon's Eero router

Chilean telecommunications firm GTD has become the first local operator to introduce Wi-Fi 7 in the country via the incorporation of Amazon's Eero 7 routers into its portfolio. The new wireless standard is designed to deliver faster speeds, lower latency and improved performance in homes with multiple connected devices, said GTD.

Zabrze water company takes over local fibre network

The municipal water company in the Polish city of Zabrze took over the city's fibre-optic network, reports Zabrze.com.pl. The network, administered previously by the Zabrze Investment Agency, spans around 150 km, including more than 115 km of ducts and almost 10,000 kilometres of fibres. The new management is expected to improve cooperation with operators, enable better telecommunications services for public entities and support development of smart city projects, including IoT-based smart metering.

Brazilian state-owned telecom services provider Telebras has been awarded a BRL 113 million contract to implement the Maranhao Infovia optical infrastructure project. The project will provide connectivity across the northeastern state, integrating 20 cities into Telebras' national fibre backbone.

GTCR merges fibre operators Point Broadband and Clearwave

US fibre operators Point Broadband and Clearwave have agreed a merger. Together they will serve small towns in 12 states, with over 500,000 premises passed. The agreement will see Point acquire Clearwave Fiber, excluding its assets in Southern Illinois which are already being acquired by Metro Communications. The private equity firms GTCR and Berkshire Partners, as well as the operator Cable One, will continue as shareholders and support further expansion of the company, both organic and through takeovers.

Oman Broadband fibre network reaches 926,884 homes in November with 326,406 active subscribers

Oman Broadband Company plans to cover 1 million residential units over the next three years, Oman News Agency reported. CEO Sultan Ahmed al Wahibi said that by the end of November 2025, its fibre-optic network had reached 926,884 units nationwide, comprising 415,792 in Muscat Governorate and 511,092 in other governorates. Wahibi said the total number of active subscribers reached 326,406, surpassing the 320,000 mark for the first time since the company's establishment.

Quickline updates broadband pricing with minimum 200 Mbps speed

UK operator Quickline Communications has refreshed its broadband packages, moving from four to three options and setting 200 Mbps as the new minimum speed. This eliminates the previous 100 Mbps package from the Yorkshire-based alternative fibre operator. The new plans are Full Fibre 200 for GBP 24.99 per month, Full Fibre 500 for GBP 28.99 and Full Fibre 1000 for GBP 32.99.
