Danish operator Norlys said its Sinal open access fibre operator will to ahead with taking over energy group Ewii's network in the Triangle Region on 02 February, expanding Sinal's coverage beyond 1 million addresses. Ewii is handing over 135,000 premises to Sinal under the deal, which gained clearance on condition that Norlys' customer business stopped serving seven antenna associations in the region. VDPC to land Barracuda cable at Sparkle's Genoa Landing Platform

Sparkle, Italy-based global provider of infrastructure and connectivity services, has announced an agreement with Valencia Digital Port Connect (VDPC) to land the Barracuda submarine cable at Sparkle's landing platform in Genoa. VDPC is developing the 1,070km Barracuda submarine cable project in partnership with private equity company Teset Capital. It will be the first direct high-capacity, low-latency submarine cable system between Spain and Italy, connecting Valencia and Genoa.

Nu Quantum sets up quantum networking centre in Spain

Nu Quantum, UK-based quantum networking company, will establish a subsidiary in Spain to act as a leading centre for quantum networking and photonic infrastructure for Distributed Quantum Computing. This comes after the Spanish government invested EUR 9.75 million as part of the company's EUR 51 million (USD 60 million) Series A funding round. The project will create over 30 highly-skilled jobs.

Gigaclear, UK rural fibre broadband provider, has connected its first customer in the Cotswolds village of Kemble, at it continues its government-funded Project Gigabit network roll-out across rural Gloucestershire. The roll-out in Kemble is part of Gigaclear's Project Gigabit contract covering East Gloucestershire. Residents and businesses in the commuter village now have access to ultrafast broadband speeds up to 900 Mbps.

Italian govt approves new broadband marketing rule to boost fibre take-up

The Italian government has approved a decree-law introducing new requirements for broadband marketing. It means operators would be required to inform potential customers of the best broadband technology available at their address. The new rule is part of a wider simplification drive which the government says should improve over 400 administrative procedures and help implement the National Recovery and Resilience measures.

Telekom Srbija and its subsidiary M:tel are upgrading their network with Ciena's optical technology to boost connectivity between Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This upgrade uses Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optical Platform and WaveLogic 5 Extreme, enabling 800 Gbps speeds over a new 150-kilometre fibre link. This will create a high-capacity, low-latency network, supporting regional growth and future 5G services. The project is a collaboration with Ciena's partner, Igmako Smart Solutions.

New Zealand wholesale operator Chorus said data demand in Q2 FY26 remains strong fibre usage continued its upward trajectory, with December 2025 average fibre usage at highest ever levels of 699 GB. This was despite the traditionally low Christmas holiday period. Year on year, the monthly average data usage on fibre for December was up 9 percent. Surf Internet secures continued investment from Macquarie

US fibre broadband provider Surf Internet has secured investment from Macquarie Capital, supported by Bain Capital and Future Standard. This completes a USD 175 million equity investment announced in February 2025. This new investment supports the next phase of the company's fibre network roll-out to underserved and rural communities cross Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. The Surf Internet network is on track to reach over 330,000 premises by end-2026.

NBI connects over 3,500 premises in Sligo, over 3,000 in Offaly

National Broadband Ireland (NBI) confirmed that over 3,500 homes, businesses and farms in County Sligo, and over 3,000 in County Offaly, are now connected to the National Broadband Network (NBP) full-fibre network. The network is available to over 11,000 premises in both Sligo and Offaly.  Across Ireland, the network is available to more than 448,000 rural premises, with over 163,000 now connected.

Community Fibre reports sees annual revenue growth of 48% in 2025

Community Fibre, London-based broadband provider, has reported record annual revenue growth of 48 percent in 2025 to GBP 113 million, with EBITDA up 530 percent from 2024 to GBP 49.8 million. The fibre broadband provider has been EBITDA positive since April 2024 and will be cash flow positive before financing costs during H1 2026.

Entel Bolivia, Claro Chile sign bi-oceanic interconnection deal

Bolivia's state-owned telecom operator Entel has signed an interconnection agreement with Claro Chile (America Movil) to establish what it describes as "the fastest and most direct bi-oceanic route connecting the Atlantic with the Pacific." Under the deal, the operators will interconnect their transport networks with a view to shortening data travel from Santiago to São Paulo by 2,400 km and cutting latency by 12 milliseconds.

Dutch parliament backs new limits on door-to-door sales

The lower house of the Dutch parliament has passed a motion calling for an end to door-to-door sales. A large majority supports government efforts to limit the commercial practice, which has been widely employed by telecom operators during the FTTH roll-out. Complaints of aggressive sales tactics lead already to government proposals for new regulations. The parliament wants consumers to have more certainty and not be bothered as much, with exceptions only for charity campaigns.

Polish wholesale operator Polski Swiatlowod Otwarty (PSO) has started deployment of a fibre-optic network in the town of Slupca in the Greater Poland region. Work is carried out with the help of EU funding. The municipal administration announced that the operator Play, controlled by Iliad, will provide services on this network.
