Verizon to close Frontier takeover on 20 January

Verizon has acquired all the necessary regulatory approvals to complete its takeover of Frontier Communications, following final clearance from the state of California. As a result, the takeover first announced in September 2024 will close on 20 January. The deal significantly expands Verizon's presence in the fixed market as it works on a new convergence strategy to grow and retain customers.

NCS CEO Ng Kuo Pin steps down as Sam Liew takes over

Singtel group's IT services arm NCS announced that Ng Kuo Pin will step down as chief executive officer on 1 April 2026 and be replaced by NCS deputy CEO and head of its government strategic business group Sam Liew, who has been appointed CEO-designate. The CEO transition follows seven years of leadership under Ng, during which NCS transformed into a "fast-growing, pan-Asia Pacific technology and digital services company".

CommScope scraps North Carolina expansion, blaming BEAD delays and Amphenol sale

CommScope has decided to discontinue a USD 60 million plan to expand its fibre-optic manufacturing in the North Carolina town of Catawba, the Charlotte Observer has reported. The company blamed financial uncertainty caused by delays in funding under the federal Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) programme. The recent sale of its Connectivity and Cable Solutions (CCS) unit to Amphenol also makes planning more difficult, it said. The rest of CommScope has now formally been rebranded as Vistance Net

UK fibre broadband provider Hyperoptic has boosted its customer experience and service with new senior appointments. Emma Dark has been appointed as Customer Experience and Service Director; with Nemanja Zec appointed as Head of Customer Service. Dark will lead the group's end-to-end customer experience strategy - covering sign-up, installation, service and support. Zec will focus on improving day-to-day service delivery.

Norwegian ICT organisation TEK Norway said it has opened a dedicated office for promoting the use of artificial intelligence. It aims to develop targeted programmes with a low entry threshold, high implementation capacity and measurable impact. Its first scheme is 'AI to the Thousand', two-week programme to guide companies from sounding out opportunities to drawing up an action plan.

Ericsson plans to cut 1,600 jobs in Sweden

Ericsson said it plans to reduce its headcount in Sweden by approximately 1,600 posts as part of measures to ensure its competitive position. Its website says it current employs 14,500 people there. Ericsson has notified the Public Employment Service (Arbetsfoermedlingen) of its intention and begun negotiations with the relevant trade unions. Schemes to increase operational efficiency will continue across the group but will not be announced separately, it added.

CyrusOne appoints Chief Business Officer to lead US operations

Global data centre group CyrusOne has appointed Robert Johnson as Chief Business Officer to oversee the operations and performance of its US data centres as they come online. He will be responsible for operational excellence, revenue management, customer outcomes and asset utilisation; and lead teams from US operations, account management, asset management, service delivery and security. He joins the company from Ericsson, where he was in charge of the Americas Network business.

AWS starts sovereign cloud service in Europe

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the general availability of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, its new offering designed to meet demand from the public sector and critical industries for local storage and increased data protection. Located physically and logically separate from other AWS Regions, the new service launches first in Germany and will come soon to AWS Local Zones in Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal.

KDDI to probe suspected sales inflation at advertising subsidiaries

KDDI has established a special investigative committee after identifying suspected inappropriate transactions at two subsidiaries that may have led to inflated sales figures in its advertising agency business. The issue relates to Biglobe, which provides internet services, and its subsidiary G-Plan. According to KDDI and reporting by NHK, concerns emerged in December 2025 after delays in payments from advertising agency clients highlighted the possibility that revenue had been overstated.

KDDI begins registrations for national drone licence renewal courses

KDDI Smart Drone has started accepting registrations for renewal courses for Japan's national drone pilot qualification, following its registration as an approved renewal training organisation with the ministry of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism. Malawian operator TNM said it closed 2025 on a strong financial and operational high and has rewarded employees with up to three months' salary as a bonus and a 20 percent salary increase effective January, Nyasatimes reported. TNM expects its net profit for the year ending 31 December 2025 to be between MWK 20.91 billion and MWK 22.88 billion, up by between 108 and 128 percent from MWK 10.05 billion recorded in 2024. Under the bonus structure, one third of the total amount was paid in December 2025 as a ye

Prosecutors in Taiwan have issued a 'wanted' notice for the arrest of OnePlus founder Pete Lau, reports Taiwan News. Lau is being sought to answer accusations that his company brought more than 70 illegal engineering hires into its Taiwanese R&D subsidiary, funded using more than TWD 2.3 billion directed through a Hong Kong-registered entity.

Meta starts job cuts at Reality Labs division - report

Meta is moving ahead with plans to cut over 1,000 jobs at its Reality Labs division, Bloomberg reports. This is part of a plan to redirect resources from virtual reality and metaverse products toward AI wearables and phone features. The job cuts were announced in an internal post from Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth seen by Bloomberg. It means around 10 percent fewer employees at the Reality Labs group, which has about 15,000 workers.
