ETSI approves first cybersecurity standard for AI models

Europe has its first official standard for AI cybersecurity. The European Telecommunication Standards Institute has published the new standard, ETSI EN 304 223, providing baseline cybersecurity requirements for AI models and systems. Thanks to its collaborative work with national standards organisations, the standard has broad support from the start.

The European Commission has announced the launch of two new calls worth a total of EUR 307.3 million under the Horizon Europe programme's "Digital, Industry and Space" cluster to boost Europe's digital innovation and competitiveness. The initiative aims to advance the development of trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI), data services and technologies that underpin the EU's strategic autonomy in the digital field, said the EC.

BT provides easyJet with mobile connectivity across Europe

BT has won a contract to provide UK airline easyJet with thousands of mobile connections across Europe. It will provide 23,000 mobile connections across the EE network to support the airline's operations in 35 countries and more than 150,000 airports across the region. EasyJet will use the EE network to connect various devices, enabling all cabin crew and pilots to access flight information and real-time training.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the general availability of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, its new offering designed to meet demand from the public sector and critical industries for local storage and increased data protection. Located physically and logically separate from other AWS Regions, the new service launches first in Germany and will come soon to AWS Local Zones in Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Open Cosmos acquires Ka band rights from Liechtenstein to support new LEO constellation

Open Cosmos has acquired Ka-band spectrum rights in Liechtenstein to support its plans to build and operate a new sovereign LEO broadband satellite constellation. The UK-based company said it plans to launch its first two satellites within the first quarter of 2026, with manufacturing of the equipment underway at its site in Oxfordshire.

Samsung announced the launch of a circular economy initiative in France, Germany, and the UK under its Certified Re‑Newed (CRN) programme, already operating in the US and South Korean markets. As part of the initiative, consumers will have the option to purchase manufacturer-certified refurbished devices exclusively on the Samsung website, offering the same warranty as new Galaxy smartphones. Eligibility for the scheme is currently restricted to top‑grade returned products within the Galaxy S25 series. This

Maincubes agrees EUR 1.8 bln refinancing with bank consortium

A consortium of banks, including German lender Norddeutsche Landesbank (Nord/LB), has agreed on a refinancing package amounting to EUR 1.8 billion for European data centre operator Maincubes. Maincubes, which operates data centres in Frankfurt, Berlin and Amsterdam, will use the funds to develop new projects across Europe. Maincubes is majority-owned by investment firm DTCP.

This will give them access to over 200 CRM and ERP platforms, fully integrated with Gamma UCaaS solutions.

IT service provider Advania has announced its appointment of Maarten Kanters as strategy director to coordinate growth initiatives in its various markets. Kanters said he will support country workforces and drive alignment, while ensuring each market can adapt to local customer needs.

Released in China last autumn, the Magic8 Pro is designed to show off the latest in AI innovations.

EU to avoid new rules for big tech in upcoming Digital Networks Act - report

Big tech companies will not face any new regulations in the EU under the proposed Digital Networks Act, people with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Despite a push from telecom operators to force large internet groups to contribute to the costs of networks and face the same rules as other communication service providers, the EU is not expected to add to the digital regulation already imposed on big tech in recent years when it unveils the draft DNA later this month, the report said.

KKR and Oak Hill invest nearly USD 2 bln in Europe's Global Technical Realty

KKR and Oak Hill Capital have committed close to USD 2 billion in equity to Global Technical Realty (GTR), a European data centre development and operating platform focused on built-to-suit facilities for hyperscale and cloud customers. KKR will make an additional USD 1.5 billion equity investment in GTR, while Oak Hill Capital will join as a new investor with a commitment of around USD 400 million.

Virtus Data Centres appoints CEO from Global Switch

Virtus Data Centres, part of ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), has announced the appointment of Adam Eaton as CEO with immediate effect. Eaton takes over from Thomas Ee, group CTO at STT GDC, who has been acting as Virtus CEO in an interim capacity for the past nine months. Eaton has over 20 years of experience in the data centre, cloud and managed services sectors. He has most recently served as executive group director for Europe at Global Switch.

DayOne raises more than USD 2 bln to fund expansion

Singapore-based DayOne Data Centers has secured more than USD 2 billion in Series C equity financing to support the next phase of its global expansion across Europe and Asia-Pacific. The hyperscale data centre operator said the round was led by existing investor Coatue, with participation from a range of international institutional investors including the Indonesia Investment Authority, Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund. The financing was completed through definitive agreements signed in early January.

Ukraine, Moldova join EU roam-like-home area from 01 January

The EU's 'roam like at home' area expanded to 32 countries from the start of 2026, with the addition of Ukraine and Moldova to the service. People from Ukraine have benefited from the system on a temporary basis since the start of the war in Russia, and the free roaming is now permanent, for both Ukrainians in the EU and EU residents travelling to Ukraine. The same applies for Moldova, where people now pay the same voice, data and SMS charges when travelling in Europe as they do at home.

Space42 conducts Europe's first licensed HAPS flight for Telespazio wildfire response joint venture

Mira Aerospace, the High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) subsidiary of UAE-based company Space42, has conducted the first HAPS flight in Europe after obtaining civilian operational approval. The flight was executed by Mira Aerospace's ApusNeo18 HAPS model for Telespazio Iberica, part of the Leonardo group. The mission is part of the ISSEC programme, a joint venture by Telespazio Iberica and Pegasus Aero Group, which focuses on developing Spain's wildfire response infrastructure.

European cloud-based business communications service provider Dstny said that it facilitated 445 million calls in 2025 via its Call2Teams middleware for Microsoft Teams. In managed services, Dstny's hosted UCaaS users grew by 10 percent year-over-year and fully managed UCaaS increased by 75 percent.

The US State Department has barred entry to the country for five European persons, including a former EU internal markets commissioner, over Digital Services Act (DSA) regulations applied to its big tech firms, in a warning shot underscoring his intent in his wrangle with Europe over online controls. The move means those affected will be unable to pass through US border security, or will be deported if already on US soil.
