Vodafone Spain boosts 4G/5G network for papal visit

Vodafone Spain has upgraded more than 2,800 mobile network cells across its 4G and 5G infrastructure in Madrid, Barcelona, Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife to handle traffic during Pope Leo XIV's visit to Spain. The operator said the work is focused on areas with the highest expected crowds and main event venues to maintain service for attendees and staff alike.

Telefonica Spain has confirmed that it will be broadcasting all matches of the FIFA 2026 World Cup in Ultra High Definition (UHD-4K) starting with the Mexico vs. South Africa opener on 11 June. Nearly two-thirds (65.0%) of Spanish households with an internet connection subscribed to more than one paid online video platform in the final quarter of 2025, up 1.7 percent year on year, according to a consumer survey conducted by regulator CNMC. Specifically, 25.5 percent of households were signed up to two SVOD platforms, 18.6 percent to three and 21.2 percent to four or more.

Telefonica confirmed it will follow its O2 brand and rivals including Vodafone in raising the cost of its TV and convergent packages with Netflix due to the latter's decision to increase its monthly subscription prices. Starting on 27 July, the price of Movistar packages with Netflix will rise by EUR 1 to EUR 2 a month depending on whether or not they come with ads.

Spain's state-backed ICT and defence group Indra has announced the appointment of Josep Maria Recasens as CEO following the departure of José Vicente de los Mozos and several more directors, including chairman Angel Escribano. The new chief executive was previously Renault Group's chief strategy officer, having also worked as CEO of the French company's electric car division, Ampere, and as corporate strategy officer for Seat.
