Telefonica adds basketball and movie channels to satellite TV service

Telefonica Spain is adding three basketball-focused channels and two movie ones to the satellite TV offer of its Movistar Plus+ service, available in SD via the Astra 1N satellite. They include Dazn Basketball, Basketball 1 and Basketball 3, part of the operator's deal with the sports streamer and featuring live games from Spain's ACB league and the Euroleague tournament.

Prime Video to air RTVE's live channels in Spain

Amazon Prime Video has reached an agreement with Spain's national broadcaster RTVE to distribute the latter's full lineup of channels on its service at no extra cost. As a result, Prime members in Spain can already access live broadcasts of La 1, La 2, Canal 24H, Clan and Teledeporte at no extra cost via a dedicated section on the Live TV homepage.

Telefonica and Guardia Civil team up for cybercrime awareness campaign

Telefonica has teamed up with the Guardia Civil military police force and Spain's National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) to launch a new edition of the "Together for your digital security" campaign, with a special focus on young people aged between 8 and 23 years old. The aim is to reduce criminal acts committed online that exploit user anonymity and make fraudulent use of AI, a problem that is increasingly affecting minors, above all on social networks.

Spanish critical communications specialist Teltronic has completed the deployment of a private 5G network covering the University of Oviedo's campus in nearby Gijón. According to the partners, the network is the first in Spain to be fully open to all university groups, integrating academic, research and technology transfer activities, rather than specific research teams and closed projects.

SpaceX has announced that subscribers to its entry-level Starlink Roam rate will now have access to 100GB of data a month at no extra cost, compared to the 50GB available previously. The company also now allows subscribers to continue accessing unlimited data at a reduced speed once their monthly bundle has been consumed.

Telefonica said it achieved the best score among 200 companies analysed in the Digital Inclusion Benchmark (DIB) conducted by the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA). The operator ranked highest for its efforts to promote a more inclusive digital economy and society, while also topping the Ranking of Digital Rights (RDR), which assesses 26 major companies in the technology sector on their treatment of users' digital rights.

Orange Spain to air Australian Open on EUR 4/mth Orange TV Libre service

Orange Spain (MasOrange) has announced that all subscribers to its Orange TV, Orange TV Libre and Orange TV Bares pay-TV offers will be able to access the forthcoming Australian Open tennis tournament from Melbourne at no extra cost. Orange TV and Orange TV Bares subscribers with compatible TVs will have access to matches in the highest possible 4K Ultra HD (UHD) resolution via the Eurosport 4K channel from 18 January to 01 February.

Vodafone Spain (Zegona) has begun 2026 with a dedicated low-cost convergent offer for customers of rival Digi, reports ADSL Zone. The premium plan normally costs EUR 70 a month but is being offered to Digi subscribers for EUR 27 a month for 12 months.

Cellnex inks 15-year deal to bring 5G-backed DAS to new Valencia stadium

Spanish infrastructure operator Cellnex has signed a 15-year agreement with top-tier La Liga football team Valencia CF to install and operate a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at the club's 70,000-capacity Nou Mestalla stadium. The DAS system, designed for large venues, will allow all mobile operators to connect instantly to a 5G network, guaranteeing uniform coverage and high capacity even during match days, said Cellnex.

Vodafone Spain begins Vera customer migration

Vodafone Spain (Zegona) said it has begun migrating the customers of Catalan telecommunications firm Vera to its network following the wholesale agreement reached last September. The deal includes mobile telephony, fibre optic (FTTH) services and preferential access to each operator's network infrastructure to support high-capacity services.

Telefonica raises EUR 1.75 bln in latest green hybrid bond issue

Telefonica said it has raised EUR 1.75 billion through the successful placement of a new green hybrid bond issue, while also launching an offer to purchase three outstanding hybrid bonds. The hybrid bond issue was split into two tranches. The first tranche, worth EUR 900 million, carries a coupon of 4.381 percent and a first call date in January 2031. The second tranche, of EUR 850 million, has a coupon of 4.881 percent and can be called in January 2034.

Ericsson Spain is set to become the latest Spanish telecommunications company to launch a redundancy process, reports Europa Press, citing a letter sent to workers' representatives. The collective dismissal process (ERE) is expected to affect around 10 percent of the Ericsson's 2,264-strong workforce in the country, according to earlier reports, but the exact scope of the adjustment has not been communicated.

Vodafone Spain said the Valencia Official College of Pharmacists (MICOF) has awarded it a contract to implement a private communications network that securely connects the 1,239 registered pharmacies in the province of Valencia. The Spanish e-commerce market continued posting double-digit growth in the second quarter of 2025, reaching record sales of EUR 28.3 billion, up 22.6 percent year on year, according to the latest data from market regulator CNMC. The total number of transactions also climbed, by 16.8 percent, to more than 493 million.

The ranking awards points to companies for their strategy, corporate transparency and performance in response to climate change, and Cellnex achieved the highest rating thanks to the considerable progress made in meeting the environmental targets it has set for 2030.

Digi Spain to air Australian Open in 4K at no extra cost

Digi Spain has announced that all subscribers to its Digi TV service will be able to watch matches from the forthcoming Australian Open grand slam tennis tournament at no extra cost starting 18 January. The most important games will be available in 4K quality on the Eurosport 4K channel (dial no. 10), with remaining matches plus analysis, debates and other competition-related content shown on additional Eurosport channels.

Cellnex prices new bond series amounting to EUR 1.5 bln

Spanish infrastructure operator Cellnex Telecom said it has completed the pricing of two series of euro-denominated bonds amounting to EUR 1.5 billion aimed at qualifying investors. In a statement to financial markets regulator CNMV, Cellnex said the first EUR 750 million series matures on 19 January 2031, has a 3.000 percent coupon payable annually and will be issued at a price of 98.494 percent of its nominal value.

Spanish govt invests EUR 7 mln in AI fashion startup Lookiero

Spain's Ministry of Digital Transformation has invested EUR 7.2 million in Lookiero, a Bilbao-based startup that specialises in the application of Artificial Intelligence technology in the fashion industry. The funds come from the state-backed Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT) launched in 2024 to manage all of the country's investments in technological matters.

Spanish operator Finetwork has announced the launch of two new low-cost convergent plans less than a couple of months after Vodafone Spain (Zegona) took over the brand. Both come with two mobile lines with 50GB of data each plus 600 Mbps fibre for EUR 25 a month and 1 Gbps for EUR 30.
