Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced at MWC plans to invest an additional USD 18 billion on top of the USD 15.7 billion already pledged to expand its data centre infrastructure in Spain and boost AI innovation in the country. The total investment of EUR 33.7 billion will create an estimated 29,900 full-time jobs in the northeastern Aragon region until 2035.

Telefonica's Movistar Plus+ pay-TV platform has signed a new agreement with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to air the latter's tournaments in Spain through to 2029. Under the deal, fans will be able to watch action from all major FIBA events and qualifiers on Movistar Plus+, including the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027.

Telefonica to showcase 5G and AI-backed emergency response system at MWC

Telefonica said intends to demonstrate at Mobile World Congress how 5G and artificial intelligence can combine to guarantee emergency medical care during major events. The test will use its new Titan Connect platform, launched in Spain in January, which integrates 5G SA, fibre, satellite and cloud technologies to ensure secure, uninterrupted connectivity in critical situations.

Telefonica secures 2 mln business lines, blocks 926 mln cyberattacks in 2025

The Telefonica Empresas B2B brand of the Spanish operator said its Mobile Network Security (SRM) service now protects more than 2 million corporate mobile lines and is playing an ever growing role in the company's cyberdefence strategy for businesses. The service, developed with Akamai Technologies and Telefonica Tech, operates directly from the company's mobile network to intercept malicious DNS requests linked to phishing, malware and botnet attacks. It blocked over 926 million attacks in 2025 alone.

Italtel presents quantum-safe projects at MWC 2026

Italian ICT and network transformation specialist Italtel said it will showcase new quantum-safe communication projects in collaboration with Canada's Quantum Bridge Technologies at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from 02 to 05 March. The company will host a joint demonstration at Quantum Bridge's stand, showing how their combined technologies can help businesses secure data and networks against future quantum computing threats.

Spanish ICT group Indra said it will showcase a suite of critical and digital technologies at MWC 2026 in Barcelona, describing its exhibit as a vision of Europe's near technological future. The company's display will highlight IndraMind, a sovereign artificial intelligence ecosystem designed to ensure cognitive superiority, operational autonomy and cybersecurity for cities, defence and critical infrastructure.

Telefonica's Movistar Centre in Barcelona will be transformed into a major technology showcase from 02 March to coincide with the start of Mobile World Congress (MWC). The space at Plaça Catalunya will feature new areas dedicated to the latest innovations from top mobile and electronics brands, aiming to give visitors access to new devices and digital experiences at the heart of the city.

Huawei takes on fitness market with new runner's smartwatch

Huawei unveiled a new slate of consumer devices at an event in Madrid ahead of Mobile World Congress. The highlight was a new smartwatch, the GT Runner 2, signalling a new focus on the fitness market for its wearables. The other products showcased included the flagship Watch Ultimate 2 and Mate 80 Pro smartphone, the 8.8-inch MatePad Mini tablet, the Band 11 series and the FreeBuds Pro 5 wireless earbuds with active noise cancelling.

MasOrange to demo AI-driven wildfire prevention platform at MWC

MasOrange will take advantage of its presence at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to showcase its Forest Smart Guardian platform, a system designed to strengthen wildfire prevention and response through the use of autonomous drones, artificial intelligence and 5G standalone technology. The Spanish operator said the initiative aims to address the growing environmental and safety challenges posed by ever more frequent and severe wildfires.

Ericsson secures MasOrange 5G core deal

Ericsson has announced a contract to unify and secure the 5G network of Spanish operator MasOrange, confirming earlier reports. The agreement will enable MasOrange to unify its 5G Standalone (5G SA) core network across all of the group's brands, eliminating all traces of the Yoigo-branded network of Masmovil and the presence of Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE. The partners refrained from disclosing the value of the contract, which Spanish news outlets have estimated at around EUR 100 million over six years.

Vodafone Spain sales up 1.1% to EUR 923 mln in December quarter

Vodafone Spain consolidated its recent return to growth in the third fiscal quarter to the end of December, according to figures published around two years after UK-based telecom investment company Zegona finalised its acquisition of the country's third largest operator. The company posted total revenues of EUR 923 million for the three-month period, up 1.1 percent compared to EUR 913 million a year earlier, although EBITDAaL fell 10.1 percent to EUR 313 million.

Spain watchdog accuses Apple, Amazon of breaching 2023 antitrust ruling

Spain's antitrust regulator CNMC has opened new proceedings against Apple and Amazon, accusing the companies of breaching a 2023 order to halt anti-competitive practices. The watchdog said both firms infringed a cease-and-desist directive linked to the previous case in which they were fined more than EUR 194 million for colluding to limit the sale of Apple products by third-party retailers on Amazon's Spanish site.
