VDPC to land Barracuda cable at Sparkle's Genoa Landing Platform

Sparkle, Italy-based global provider of infrastructure and connectivity services, has announced an agreement with Valencia Digital Port Connect (VDPC) to land the Barracuda submarine cable at Sparkle's landing platform in Genoa. VDPC is developing the 1,070km Barracuda submarine cable project in partnership with private equity company Teset Capital. It will be the first direct high-capacity, low-latency submarine cable system between Spain and Italy, connecting Valencia and Genoa.

Italian GDP strengthens in Q4, leading to 0.7% annual growth

Italian GDP expanded in the fourth quarter of 2025 by 0.3 percent on a quarterly basis and by 0.8 percent year-on-year, according to the preliminary, seasonally adjusted figures from Istat. The growth was supported by domestic consumption, offsetting weaker exports, and expansion in industry and agriculture, and to a lesser extent, services.

Italian govt approves new broadband marketing rule to boost fibre take-up

The Italian government has approved a decree-law introducing new requirements for broadband marketing. It means operators would be required to inform potential customers of the best broadband technology available at their address. The new rule is part of a wider simplification drive which the government says should improve over 400 administrative procedures and help implement the National Recovery and Resilience measures.

Iliad Italia has repeated its leading position in the fixed network experience ranking published by nPerf, with the report concluding that the operator provided the most consistent quality nationally throughout 2025 via FTTH technology, as it did so in the previous two years.

Retelit awarded EcoVadis Platinum sustainability rating

Italian B2B-focused fibre provider Retelit has achieved Platinum status in the latest assessment carried out by international sustainability rating platform EcoVadis, an improvement on the previous year's Gold medal. Retelit said the award places it in the top 1 percent of over 150,000 companies assessed globally for the maturity of their sustainability management system.

Italian fixed wireless broadband provider Eolo has signed a strategic partnership with national press distributor M-DIS to broaden access to digital services across Italy, with a focus on rural areas and small towns. The deal aims to use M-DIS's extensive newsstand network to support Eolo's efforts to narrow the digital divide through fixed wireless access connectivity.

Italian operator Fastweb (Fastweb+Vodafone) has upgraded its fixed wireless access (FWA) plans with 5G, availale to customers in non-fibre areas. The entry-level Casa FWA plan is now called Casa FWA Light and offers unlimited data at download speeds of up to 300 Mbps plus unlimited calls and a Wi-Fi 6 modem at a cost of EUR 24.95 a month, rising to EUR 27.95 for Casa FWA Start with a Wi-Fi repeater.

TIM shareholders approve savings shares conversion and capital reduction

Telecom Italia (TIM) said its shareholders approved a proposal to convert the company's savings shares into ordinary stock and reduces its share capital to EUR 6 billion. The share conversion – a longstanding aim of CEO Pietro Labriola – is designed to simplify the group's capital structure, reduce governance costs and enhance liquidity.

Telecom Italia (TIM) is offering unlimited mobile data to all customers residing in areas affected by Cyclone Harry, which hit southern Italy between 18 and 22 January. The free unlimited data promo lasts seven days from the day of activation and all customers in the affected areas of Sicily, Calabria and Sardinia have been sent an SMS informing them of the offer.

Italy business and consumer morale up again in January

Italy's business and consumer confidence climbed again in January, according to the latest report from national statistics office Istat. Overall business confidence across the manufacturing, retail, construction and services sectors rose to 97.6 from 96.6 in December, the highest reading since January 2024, led mainly by an increase in market services sentiment from 100.2 to 103.4.

Italian operator Fastweb+Vodafone has signed a three-year memorandum of understanding with the Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI4I) to co-develop and deploy artificial intelligence tools for Italian companies, initially targeting advanced manufacturing, automotive, robotics and automation. The agreement aims to reinforce Italy's industrial base by widening access to high-performance computing, AI platforms and specialist skills, particularly for firms looking to modernise production and scale

Fastweb launches Mobile Power offer with 400GB 5G data

Italian operator Fastweb (Fastweb+Vodafone) has followed Vodafone Italia with the official launch of a new mobile rate offering 400GB of data at 5G speeds, unlimited voice calls to all national mobile and landline numbers, 200 SMS plus 65 GB of EU roaming data for under EUR 15 a month. Fastweb's offering now includes four plans starting at EUR 9.95 a month that are available to customers requesting a new number or porting their existing one.

Italian operator WindTre has launched a dedicated unlimited data offer in its Go-branded range for customers porting their number. The plan, dubbed WindTre Go Unlimited XXS 5G Digital, includes unlimited minutes to all national landline and mobile numbers plus 50 SMS to all national numbers as well as unlimited data at fastest possible 5G speeds for EUR 4.99 a month.

Telecom Italia (TIM) has confirmed that it will be the main partner of this year's Sanremo Music Festival, having last year returned as a sponsor after a four-year break. The 76th edition of the legendary festival of Italian music will be held at the city's Teatro Ariston from 24 to 28 February.

Former FiberCop CEO Ferraris joins Fastweb+Vodafone board

Italian operator Fastweb+Vodafone has appointed former FiberCop chief executive Luigi Ferraris to its board of directors as executive vice president. The company said Ferraris brings deep expertise in managing large-scale infrastructure and complex operation, having previously served as CEO and general manager of electricity grid operator Terna, chief financial officer at Poste Italiane and chief financial officer and chairman of Enel Green Power.

Vodafone Italia (Fastweb+Vodafone) has launched a new premium mobile plan with 400GB of data at highest possible speeds, unlimited voice calls to all national mobile and landline numbers, 200 SMS plus 65 GB of EU roaming data for under EUR 15 a month. The new Vodafone Mobile Power rate also activates a EUR 4 a month discount for convergent customers with landlines.

Very Mobile, the low-cost brand of Italian operator WindTre, has launched an unlimited data plan at maximum possible 5G speeds for under EUR 10 a month. The Very 9.99 Unlimited offer can be accessed by anyone porting their number from Iliad, Fastweb, CoopVoce and a number of MVNOs.

Italian operator Tiscali has revamped its 5G portfolio, offering three new plans at prices starting at EUR 5.99 a month. All rates come with unlimited calls and 100 SMS plus 150GB of data for EUR 5.99 a month, rising to 250GB for EUR 7.99 and 350GB for EUR 10.99 a month.

Italian FTTH scheme tops 27,200 connected schools

Italian state infrastructure agency Infratel announced that its 'Connected Schools' high-speed broadband project reached 27,206 activations at the end of December, around five years after its launch. Fibre connections had been activated in 24,087 schools under Infratel's own core initiative plus a further 3,119 schools from regional partner companies.

Very Mobile, the low-cost brand of Italian operator WindTre, has again extended its 'Very Exclusive' offer for prepay subscribers and is giving away two top-ups. The plan, which comes with a 150GB data bundle plus unlimited calls and SMS for EUR 4.99 a month, with no activation or SIM card fee, is now available until at least 29 January.

Italian MVNO 1Mobile, also operating as UnoMobile, has announced that it will be one of the sponsors of the 76th edition of the Sanremo Music Festival. The operator will once again sponsor the Casa Sanremo hospitality centre, whose ground floor will be open to the public, from 24 to 28 February.

Very Mobile, the low-cost brand of Italian operator WindTre, is getting in touch with former customers to offer them a plan that comes with 300GB of data and unlimited national calls for under EUR 6 a month, reports Mondo Mobile Web, citing SMS sent to users. The EUR 5.99 a month rate can be activated online or at stores by selected ex-customers who have switched to other operators.
