Brazilian telecom company Oi is preparing to sell its IT and connectivity division, Oi Solucoes, for an estimated BRL 1.4 billion, according to daily O Estado de Sao Paulo. Eutelsat has partnered with Co-op Cable to expand direct-to-home (DTH) television and connectivity services across the Caribbean, using its Eutelsat 65 West A (E65WA) satellite. America Movil's Claro units in Central America and the Caribbean posted total revenues up 6.3 percent year on year to USD 1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2026, thanks mainly to substantial customer growth across the region. Service revenues rose 6.4 percent year on year to USD 1.1 billion, while EBITDA for the region came to USD 548 million, up 9.3 percent year on year, with the margin climbing 1.2 percentage points to 43.8 percent of sales.

America Movil said revenues at its Claro Argentina unit rose 6.9 percent year on year to ARS 907.7 billion after inflation in the first quarter of 2026, with service revenues climbing 7.6 percent to ARS 814.0 billion, attributing mainly to a growth in the mobile and fixed line customer base. Mobile service revenue increased 8.5 percent after inflation while fixed-line revenue dipped 0.5 percent due to difficulties in accessing clients in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area.

America Movil's Claro Ecuador unit reported a 2.2 percent year on year rise in revenues to USD 260 million in the first quarter of 2026, attributed mainly to growth in the postpay and fibre broadband segments, coupled with a 6.3 percent increase in device sales. Claro Peru's total revenues came to PEN 1.77 billion in the first quarter of 2026, up 7.2 percent from a year earlier thanks to gains in mobile and fixed broadband, offsetting prepay disconnections. Service revenue was PEN 1.39 billion, up 4.8 percent year on year, with the operator's adjusted EBITDA rising 8.0 percent to PEN 709 million in the January to March period and the margin climbing 0.3 percent of a percentage point to 40.0 percent.

Claro Colombia, a subsidiary of America Movil, reported a 5.9 percent year on year rise in revenues to COP 4.3 trillion in the first quarter of 2026, compared to a 1.6 percent decline in the previous quarter. Total service revenues were up 7.4 percent to COP 3.3 trillion, driven by a double-digit (10.2%) growth in mobile revenues, its strongest performance in a decade. Fixed-line service revenue also increased by 3.2 percent, up from 2.2 percent in Q4.

America Movil reported first-quarter revenues for its domestic market of Mexico of MXN 86.3 billion, up 5.1 percent year on year, thanks to growth in both prepay and postpay, coupled with a 5.3 percent increase in ARPU. America Movil reported a strong start to 2026, adding over 3 million new postpaid customers and almost 600,000 fixed broadband subscribers. The operator reported revenues up 2.1 percent year-on-year to MXN 237 billion, and EBITDA rose 3.8 percent to MXN 95 billion. Excluding currency effects, revenues jumped 6.1 percent, including 4.6 percent growth in service revenue and 11.3 percent higher equipment revenue, while EBITDA was up 8.0 percent excluding forex.

Mexico's Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency (ATDT) has published its Connectivity Programme in Public Sites and Priority Attention Areas (PCSP-AAP) for the year 2026, pledging to connect around 640,000 inhabitants in the country's most underserved regions. The ATDT was set up by president Claudia Sheinbaum last year to take over all matters relating to radio spectrum, coverage and service continuity, with a particular focus on closing the country's digital divide.

The total number of fibre-optic lines in Argentina came to 6.2 million at the end of 2025, up around 1.3 million or 27 percent year on year, according to the latest update from communications regulator Enacom. The rise in FTTH connections saw fibre become the leading fixed broadband technology, overtaking cable, which fell around 7 percent year on year to 5.2 million.

Brisanet mobile base passes 953,000 in March

Brazilian operator Brisanet saw a 4.7 percent increase in its fixed broadband customer base in March, reaching 1.56 million subscribers. The company's network now passes 7.2 million homes, a 1.2 percent rise year-over-year, and serves 159 cities in Brazil's Northeast Region. Furthermore, Brisanet's mobile phone services more than doubled its customer base to about 953,500 by the end of March. The operator's mobile coverage extends to 15.4 million inhabitants as of March.

AT&T Mexico launches roaming bundles for prepay subs

AT&T Mexico has announced the launch of a series of roaming bundles that will enable prepay subscribers to access unlimited data when travelling abroad at prices starting at MXN 299 (EUR 14.5). The 'Paquete Preferente' bundle includes Europe, Asia and Latin America at a price of MXN 299 for five days, MXN 549 for 10 days and MXN 849 for 17 days.

Movistar Mexico (Telefonica) has confirmed that it will continue as official sponsor Mexican Baseball League (LMB) for the third consecutive year. The company announced the deal to coincide with the start of the new LMB season featuring 20 teams spread across 18 Mexican states.

Colombia opens call to allocate 900 MHz spectrum to rural providers

Colombia's Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (Mintic) has launched a call to grant spectrum usage permits in the 900 MHz band to local operators with a view to enhancing fixed residential connections and IoT uses in rural and remote areas where coverage by commercial operators is currently insufficient or non-existent.

Paraguay to award more spectrum in 2.3 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands

Paraguayan telecommunications regulator Conatel has published the draft terms and conditions for a new tender of 5G-compatible spectrum in the country. The watchdog said it plans to grant licences for the provision of mobile, cellular and internet access and data transmission services in the 2.3 GHz and 3.5 GHz frequency bands.

URUGUAY 17 APR

Millicom launches Tigo brand in Uruguay, to invest USD 600 mln

Millicom has officially launched its Tigo brand in Uruguay around six months after finalising its acquisition of Telefonica's assets in the country for USD 440 million. At a launch event featuring group CEO Marcelo Benítez and Uruguayan president Yamandu Orsi, the company said it would invest a further USD 600 million in Tigo Uruguay over the next four years, including USD 100 million to boost the operator's digital infrastructure.
