Brazilian operators Telefonica, TIM and Claro have jointly launched an arbitration case against Oi, reported daily O Estado de Sao Paulo. They are demanding BRL 3.1 billion, claiming Oi breached their January 2021 agreement for the sale of its mobile network, specifically concerning post-closing price adjustments. Internet exchange (IX) operator DE-CIX said it has upgraded connectivity between its locations in Mexico and Dallas ahead of the FIFA World Cup men's football competition this summer. A total of 844,000 fixed and mobile numbers were ported in Chile in the first quarter of 2026, the vast majority of which – 836,000 – were mobile numbers. The latest update from telecommunications regulator Subtel also revealed that the month of March saw more than 262,000 fixed and mobile numbers ported, up 3.6 percent year on year. Of these, 258,000 were mobile numbers, up 4.4 percent compared to the same month in 2025.

Nearly 7 in 10 Peruvians using messaging apps

The percentage of Peruvian users using instant messaging services increased to 68.6 percent at the end of 2025, according to data from the annual Residential Survey of Telecommunications Services (Erestel) cited by telecommunications regulator Osiptel. WhatsApp continued as the most popular instant messaging service in Peru, used by some 98.6 percent of the total, followed by Facebook Messenger with 45.1 percent, TikTok direct messages (27.9%) and Instagram with 20.5 percent.

Venezuela's Digitel and Simple TV launch joint pay-TV offer

Venezuelan operator Digitel said it has reached an agreement with pay-TV provider Simple TV to enable its 9 million-plus mobile and broadband users nationwide to access streaming app Simpleplus. The latter offers over 130 live channels as well as exclusive content and on-demand programming. Sporting tournaments available include the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP), the national football league and international competitions such as Spain's LaLiga.

Argentina clears new spectrum for Starlink expansion

Argentina's telecommunications regulator Enacom has authorised SpaceX's Starlink to operate in additional frequency bands not yet allocated to fixed satellite services, enabling the company to expand its operations in the country. The approval covers several segments in the W band, including ranges between 92 GHz and 114.25 GHz for Earth-to-space transmissions via gateway earth stations.

Its entry to the Brazilian market is expected to broaden satellite internet offerings, intensify competition, and accelerate connectivity access in areas where fibre optics are not yet available, including rural communities, isolated locations and parts of the Amazon.

Brazil launches Infovia 03, doubling internet speed in Amapa

Brazilian Minister of Communications Frederico de Siqueira Filho was due to inaugurate Infovia 03 in Macapa, state of Amapa, on 01 June. Through this project, internet service providers in Macapa will now be able to offer broadband at up to 2 Gbps, doubling the previous 1 Gbps top speed. In Afua, Para, on Marajo Island, speeds will jump from 300 Mbps via radio to 750 Mbps via fibre-optic cable. Furthermore, Infovia 03 should reduce internet outages by providing another access route for both Amapa and Para.

Colombia's Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) has fined Movistar Colombia COP 1.358 billion for failing to adequately protect users against SIM swap fraud. The entity said the operator did not use appropriate identity verification tools during SIM replacement procedures, enabling unauthorised access to customers' mobile numbers and, in some cases, their bank accounts.

Vietnamese state-run telecommunications giant Viettel is set to invest USD 560 million to launch a new operator in the Dominican Republic, reports TN Global, citing a recent filing on the Hanoi Stock Exchange. The entity, to be called Viettel Dominicana, will compete with the country's existing MNOs Claro (America Movil), Altice and Viva (Trilogy) for the Dominican Republic's 10.6 million active mobile lines.

The message was sent from Sumapaz via Skylo Technologies' non-terrestrial network to a Viasat satellite and routed to an emergency response centre in Bogota.
