Mexico's TV Azteca files for bankruptcy protection

Mexican broadcaster TV Azteca (Grupo Salinas) announced that it will initiate a financial, corporate and operational restructuring via voluntary bankruptcy protection, following approval by shareholders. In a statement, CEO Rafael Rodriguez described the move as "a last resort tool aimed at preserving the value of the company, ensuring the continuity of operations and facilitating the orderly fulfilment of obligations without interrupting its functioning."

The project will implement Qvantel's cloud-based digital BSS, deployed on Amazon Web Services, and include the migration of all Xtrim customer accounts to the new platform.

The Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel) has announced a new spectrum tender to support 5G development and expand digital connectivity after the previous frequency auction was declared void due to lack of commitments from the country's operators in 2024. The watchdog said it proposes awarding up to 60 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band, 30 MHz in the 1700/2100 MHz band (AWS), 100 MHz in the 2300–2400 MHz band and 120 MHz in the 3500–3700 MHz band.

Televisa Q4 revenue down 4.5% to MXN 14.5 bln, cancels dividend

Mexican broadcaster and telecommunications operator Grupo Televisa reported revenues of MXN 14.5 billion in the final quarter of 2025, down 4.5 percent year on year due mainly to steep subscriber losses at its Sky-branded satellite TV unit, which posted a 16.8 percent slump in revenues. Fourth-quarter operating income increased by 6.1 percent year on year to MXN 5.9 billion, with a 40.9 percent margin, thanks to efficiency measures and Opex reductions.

Uruguayan state-owned operator Antel has been selected by Google as the country's first local provider authorised to offer Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) services. The partnership centres on Antel's Tier III data center in the Pando Industrial Park, where Google will deploy its distributed cloud infrastructure. Antel will market the service to the corporate sector under a hybrid cloud model combining local data management and Google's global cloud capabilities.

Spanish commercial broadcaster Atresmedia has extended its agreement with America Movil in Latin America to add the full catalogue of its Atresplayer OTT service to Claro Video in Mexico and 13 more territories. NEC announced a new contract with Brazilian operator Eletronet to modernize its optical backbone with the deployment of Nokia's optical products. TIM Brasil announced that former TIM group Chief Financial Officer Adrian Calaza has been appointed as chairman of its board of directors, succeeding Nicandro Durante. Peruvian fixed internet lines up 9%, Claro surpasses Movistar

The number of active fixed line internet accesses in Peru reached 4.38 million at the end of the final quarter of 2025, up 9.2 percent year on year, according to the latest update from telecom regulator Osiptel. The October to December period saw the number of active fibre-to-the-home accesses in Peru climb around 21 percent year on year to 3.61 million, equivalent to over 82 percent of the fixed broadband total, resulting in more than 94 percent of users accessing download speeds above 100 Mbps.

Scala Data Centers and Engie Solucoes have activated a dedicated substation for Scala's data centre campus in Barueri, Sao Paulo. Movistar Mexico (Telefonica) reported revenues of EUR 1.23 billion in 2025 as a whole, down from EUR 1.29 billion in 2024, including an 8.3 percent annual decline in the final quarter of the year due primarily to lower handset sales. Selected financial data released by the operator included a full-year EBITDA of EUR 128 million, a figure that rose 71.4 percent year on year in the fourth quarter thanks to efficiencies achieved in operating expenses.

Mexican triple-play operator Totalplay (Grupo Salinas) reported revenues up 6 percent year on year to MXN 11.18 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 as a 5 percent increase in residential earnings offset a 11 percent decline in the enterprise segment. However, the company's EBITDA fell by 8 percent year on year to MXN 5.03 billion, with the margin coming in at 42 percent.

Mexico and Colombia telecom watchdogs to cooperate on digital policy

Mexico's Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) and Colombia's Communications Regulatory Commission (CRC) have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen bilateral cooperation in telecommunications and digital regulation. The two watchdogs said the deal aims to deepen technical collaboration and exchange of expertise to address common challenges in an evolving digital ecosystem.

Peruvian telecom services regulator Osiptel has announced plans to continue its campaign against the use of stolen or illegal handsets linked to criminal activities by blocking another 100,000 devices, following the 200,000 blocked since the start of 2026. Devices are classified as high-risk because they are not on the official 'Renteseg' database and are connected to individuals who have repeatedly used invalid or cloned IMEIs.

TelevisaUnivision cuts losses in Q4 on ViX profits

TelevisaUnivision reduced its fourth-quarter 2025 losses as profitability from its ViX streaming platform helped to offset weaker advertising demand in the United States. The Spanish-language media company, formed in 2022 through the merger of Televisa's content operations with US-based Univision, posted a net loss of USD 234.7 million, down from USD 809.7 million a year earlier, while total revenue slipped 2 percent year on year to USD 1.32 billion.

Telconet lands CSN-1 subsea cable in Ecuador

Ecuador-based Telconet Latam has successfully landed its Carnival Submarine Network-1 (CSN-1) undersea cable in Anconcito (Ecuador) around four months after the system landed in Barranquilla (Colombia). The 4,500 km network, built in partnership with Alcatel Submarine Networks, will eventually connect Florida with Panama, Ecuador and Colombia, and is due to enter commercial service in the second half of 2026.

Anduray named head of Conatel Honduras

The Honduran government has announced the appointment of Fernando Anduray as the new president of telecommunications regulator Conatel, tasked with expanding national coverage, updating the sector's regulatory framework and overseeing the rollout of the Trans Americas Fiber System (TAFS), among other key projects. Cesar Augusto Caceres was also named principal commissioner of Conatel and Grace Mariela Sierra Cruz alternate commissioner.

Telefonica Brasil sees net revenue growth of 7% in Q4

Telefonica Brasil (Vivo) reported net revenue growth of 7.1 percent year-on-year to BRL 15.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025, driven by strong performance in postpaid, FTTH, and corporate data and digital services. Fixed revenues increased by 5.4 percent in the same period, while average monthly revenue per RGU in the last 12 months rose to BRL 65.80 (+5.7%). EBITDA soared 17.7 percent to BRL 596.9 million with a 42.9 percent margin. EBITDA AL expanded 9.2 percent, with a 33.8 percent margin.
