Macra urges cross-sector collaboration to build Malawian digital system

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has called for cooperation among different sectors and stakeholders to build a resilient digital ecosystem. Acting director general Mayamiko Nkoloma held discussions with the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC), Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), Azam Media and Judiciary. He said that despite work towards the digital agenda, progress is slow because sectors tend to work as individuals, which leads to duplication of efforts.

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe adds 103 bases stations and sites in Q3

Zimbabwean operator Econet Wireless said it deployed 103 more base stations and sites in the third quarter ended 30 November 2025. In a trading statement, the company said that 27 were lightweight and cost-effective base stations for developing urban and rural areas. It aimed to improve coverage in areas historically suffering from poor connectivity and to meet rising demand from urbanisation.

A consortium led by NTT Docomo Business has launched a large-scale autonomous bus demonstration in Yokohama, using private 5G and roadside infrastructure to support stable urban autonomous driving and remote vehicle monitoring. The trial, running from 17 to 22 January, covers a 10.6-km route between Tsurugamine Station on the Sotetsu Line and the north gate of Yokohama Zoo Zoorasia. Singapore-based Kaytus has introduced a one-stop, end-to-end liquid-cooled data centre solution aimed at operators and enterprises building infrastructure for AI workloads. The company said the offering is designed to address the complexity of deploying high-density, liquid-cooled facilities while improving energy efficiency. According to Kaytus, the solution supports power densities of up to 15 kW per node and 130 kW per cabinet, with a stated power usage effectiveness below 1.1.

Ekinops has issued a trading update ahead of the publication of its full-year financial results on 10 March. Ericsson plans to cut 1,600 jobs in Sweden

Ericsson said it plans to reduce its headcount in Sweden by approximately 1,600 posts as part of measures to ensure its competitive position. Its website says it current employs 14,500 people there. Ericsson has notified the Public Employment Service (Arbetsfoermedlingen) of its intention and begun negotiations with the relevant trade unions. Schemes to increase operational efficiency will continue across the group but will not be announced separately, it added.

Xtera wins submarine cable system contract with Cordova Telecom

Cordova Telecom Cooperative, telecoms provider operating the the Cordova region of Alaska, has selected Xtera to provide engineering design and submarine cable equipment for the Fiber Internet Serving Homes in Southeast Alaska (FISH in SEAK) project. The contract was awarded to Xtera, global provider of subsea fibre optic solutions, in partnership with Pioneer Consulting, submarine fibre-optic telecoms consulting and project management group.

Polish agency checks find field radiation at 5G base stations in line with legal norms

The Polish R&D Institute of Communications has completed a campaign on checking electromagnetic field radiation at mobile base stations, as well as access points on 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz wireless LANs at schools. The non-ionising field radiation levels also were measured at 5G base stations working on the 3,400–3,800 MHz band in 40 locations in the cities of Kielce, Lublin, Lodz and Opole. No cases of radiation exceeding the maximum allowed legal levels were registered.

Play gets PLN 450 mln loan for buying Ericsson equipment

Polish operator Play, controlled by Iliad, has concluded an agreement on a PLN 450 million loan with Bank Hadlowy, headquartered in Warsaw, reports the news agency PAP. The operator plans to use the funds for acquiring network equipment from Ericsson in the period to end-2027. The loan is due in March 2039.

University of Oviedo activates private 5G network with Teltronic

Spanish critical communications specialist Teltronic has completed the deployment of a private 5G network covering the University of Oviedo's campus in nearby Gijón. According to the partners, the network is the first in Spain to be fully open to all university groups, integrating academic, research and technology transfer activities, rather than specific research teams and closed projects.

Huber + Suhner expands sustainable packaging policy

Huber + Suhner said it has expanded its sustainable packaging policy to seventeen fibre-optic product categories altogether following strong customer response in 2025. It has removed over 743,000 single use plastic bags, replaced 1.5 million twist cable ties and converted 35,000 blister packages to 100 percent recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
