Digital inclusion support could help UK switch off DTT system in 2030s - study

The UK could fully transition to internet-delivered TVs in the 2030s if the governments sets a clear timetables and funds targeted support for those most at risk of digital exclusion, according to new research prepared for Sky. The 'Stream On: The Future of UK TV" report, prepared by Oliver & Ohlbaum Associates, shows that most UK viewers have already made the switch - with 94 percent of UK adults having home internet access and 92 percent using a VoD service.

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has added UK hosting provider FyfeWeb as a new member network and reseller partner. FyfeWeb has joined the ConneXions Partner Programme and has taken a 100GE port at LON1, LINX's primary London location; and a connectivity presence at the secondary London peering site (LON2) to provide redundancy and enhanced network resilience.

Gigaclear, UK rural fibre broadband provider, has connected its first customer in the Cotswolds village of Kemble, at it continues its government-funded Project Gigabit network roll-out across rural Gloucestershire. The roll-out in Kemble is part of Gigaclear's Project Gigabit contract covering East Gloucestershire. Residents and businesses in the commuter village now have access to ultrafast broadband speeds up to 900 Mbps.

YouTube withdraws from UK TV viewing measurement service - report

YouTube has withdrawn from a TV viewership measurement service operated by TV ratings agency Barb and Kantar Media, reports the Financial Times. YouTube parent Google is understood to have sent a legal 'case and desist' letter to Kantar Media just months after the launch of the new measurement service in summer 2025.

BT Group's consumer unit EE will open a new Experience store in Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex on 29 January. The new store will provide an immersive shopping experience for customers, who can test the latest connected technology and get support from in-store guides. It has Experience Zones based around four key areas - Home, Learn, Work and Game; complemented by a Tech Home area showing connected living technologies.

Clarus provides Starlink satellite connectivity to CalMac Ferries

Clarus Networks has won a 12-month contract from UK ferry operator CalMac Ferries to provide satellite connectivity, technical support and centralised fleet network management services. The contract was awarded through Public Contracts Scotland. Clarus will provide a pooled Starlink data service across the CalMac fleet, delivering low-latency, high-speed connectivity. CalMac operates 29 routes to over 50 destinations along the west coast of Scotland, with its fleet completing around 136,000 sailings a year.

Community Fibre reports sees annual revenue growth of 48% in 2025

Community Fibre, London-based broadband provider, has reported record annual revenue growth of 48 percent in 2025 to GBP 113 million, with EBITDA up 530 percent from 2024 to GBP 49.8 million. The fibre broadband provider has been EBITDA positive since April 2024 and will be cash flow positive before financing costs during H1 2026.

New research from CCS Insight shows strong awareness of eSIM in the UK, with almost three quarters of UK consumers having heard of eSIM, up from 22 percent in the 2022 survey. The 8th annual survey of consumer buying behaviour for mobile phones and connectivity shows rising demand for travel eSIM, with almost one quarter of Brits using a travel eSIM provider - increasing to one third (32%) of people who have taken an overseas holiday in the last three years.

UK govt announces new Scottish AI Growth Zone in Lanarkshire

The UK government has announced a new AI Growth Zone in Scotland, delivered by UK data centre company DataVita around their site in Airdrie, in partnership with AI cloud company CoreWeave. The new Lanarkshire AI Growth Zone will create more than 3,400 high-value jobs over the coming years, including 50 apprenticeships, and will have strong links with businesses and universities. Around 800 jobs of the created jobs will be high-paying AI jobs, with the rest made up of construction jobs.

Highland Community Broadband to switch off service in April

Highland Community Broadband (HIC), Scottish wireless broadband provider, will close down in April 2026 after being left unable to compete with mobile network upgrades and faster satellite broadband services such as Starlink, reports BBC News. In a statement, the HIC board said the closure was the result of "increasing financial difficulty" with maintenance and legal expenses. The service will be switched off on 30 April. HIC has around 25 wireless transmitters and 400 subscribers.

BBC confirms appointment of Interim Director-General

The BBC has announced that Director-General Tim Davie will leave his role on 02 April, with Rhodri Talfan Davies appointed as Interim Director General until a permanent replacement is found. To support a smooth transition, Davies will join the BBC Board as an Executive Director on 01 February, a position will he retain when he takes over as Interim Director-General on 03 April. During this period, Davies will also continue serving as Interim Nations Director.

CityFibre to cut third of staff as focus shifts to acquisitions - report

UK wholesale operator CityFibre is set to cut around 450 jobs, equal to around a third of its workforce, according to information seen by the Financial Times. As the UK fibre market matures, the company is looking to streamline its operations and focus more on expansion through acquisitions rather than its own network construction.

Barclay to offer business broadband on Fibrus network

Barclay Communications announced it is now a direct partner of the Fibrus network in Northern Ireland, offering broadband services to businesses on the network. Speeds up to 1000/1000 Mbps are available under the fully managed service, including installation. Thanks to the new agreement, Barclay can provide fibre at another 431,000 premises in Northern Ireland. That includes Fibrus' commercial network as well as the 'Project Stratum' locations it covered with FTTP using public subsidies.

The UK is pushing ahead with restrictions on Google after last year giving the search giant "strategic market status". The SMS designation allows the Competition and Markets Authority to impose remedies to curb Google's market power and improve competition in the market. These will now include choice screens in Android and Chrome to make it easier for people to use alternative search engines, greater disclosure on how Google ranks businesses in search results and a right for publishers to opt out of AI over

UK govt launches free AI training courses for all

The UK government has expanded its AI training programme to offer free courses to every adult, with a stated aim of equipping 10 million workers with foundational skills by 2030. The initiative, available through the AI Skills Hub, targets practical abilities for using AI tools in tasks such as drafting text, creating content and completing administrative tasks. Courses, benchmarked by Skills England, take as little as 20 minutes and award completers a virtual AI foundations badge.

Netomnia adds 49,000 connected premises in Q4, reports positive FY EBITDA

UK fibre altnet Netomnia Group, which includes Brsk and YouFibre, said it added 49,000 connected premises in the fourth quarter and finished the year with 445,000 connected premises. The total number of serviceable premises increased by 245,000 during Q4 to reach a "milestone" figure of 3.0 million on 31 December 2025. Full year revenue climbed 168 percent year on year to GBP 104 million and adjusted EBITDA was positive at GBP 5 million after a loss of GBP 29 million in 2024.

UK looks to simplify building permit rules for fibre cabling

The UK government is working on simplifying building permit procedures for the installation of fibre-optic infrastructure and mobile antennas. The Ministry of Housing presented the proposals for changing the application requirements for telecoms work and is calling for feedback from market participants by 24 March.

Exchange Communications upgrades 4G coverage at Chancery Rosewood hotel

Exchange Communications announced it has installed 4G-enabled IoT solutions and mobile connectivity at the Chancery Rosewood hotel in London. The equipment is expected to support stronger 4G mobile coverage in the hotel, with faster data speeds, as well as prepare for the upgrade to a 5G network later. The system is compatible with all major UK providers, including VodafoneThree, O2 and EE, and can be used by guests and hotel management.

UK's Digital TV Group names former Sky exec Mackenzie as new chair

The UK's Digital TV Group (DTG) appointed Lesley Mackenzie as its new Chair. She will succeed Simon Fell in April, when he steps down after serving the maximum term permitted under the group's constitution. The DTG supports the industry transition to digital broadcasting, helping set standards and technical specifications for equipment and accessibility and coordinate cooperation across the video value chain.

Spusu UK extends price freeze into 2026

MVNO Spusu UK has announced an extension of its price freeze for the third year in a row, pledging not to raise prices in 2026. The company launched services in the UK in 2023. UK managing director Christian Banhans said Spusu knows how important it is for customers to "have confidence in their monthly bills", especially after the Christmas period. The price freeze covers all Spusu SIM-only plans, which start from GBP 4.90 per month.

Maintel expects revenue of GBP 92 million for 2025

Maintel, a UK provider of cloud communications, connectivity and security managed services, expects results for the full-year 2025 to 31 December to be in line with expectations. It expects to report total revenue of GBP 92.2 million and adjusted EBITDA of GBP 7.2 million for the year.
