PlatformX Communications (PXC), UK wholesale networking provider, has added Trooli Residential FTTP services to its platform. This further strengthens PXC's altnet portfolio, with residential partners able to access more than 477,000 homes on the Trooli rural and semi-rural network.

Freshwave launches new 5G on Omni solution

Freshwave Group, UK-based connectivity-as-a-service provider, has launched the new '5G on Omni' solution to provide UK organisations with guaranteed indoor 5G connectivity from all mobile network operators (MNOs). This expands Freshwave's Omni Network, a 4G indoor small cell solution. The Omni Network solution has gone live in over 6 million sq ft of real state or in-build since launch in June 2024.

Sony introduces age verification for PlayStation users in UK, Ireland

Sony has announced the introduction of age verification for PlayStation users in the UK and Ireland. Sony said the age checks are being introduced to ensure that users are provided with the best PlayStation experience for their age, and to protect younger users from inappropriate content. It is advising customers to complete age verification as soon as possible to avoid any service disruption. In-game communications and other features will be blocked from June 2026 to users who have not verified their age.

Netgem fixes UK price of Pleio TV streaming device at GBP 99

Netgem has announced a new permanent price of GBP 99 for the Pleio TV streaming device in the UK. Managing Director Sylvian Thevenot said it had made the decision to absorb the costs of rising RAM prices, instead of passing them onto customers, to help drive user base growth. He said Netgem was focused on long-term market presence and keeping the product price at an accessible point to encourage customer take-up. Netgem has also confirmed the availability of the Pleio device on eBay in the UK.

UK fibre broadband provider Toob has announced the launch of three new speed options for home broadband customers. These are home300, offering speeds of 300 Mbps on the Toob network for everyday life; home600 with speeds of 600 Mbps on the Toob network for busier households; and home2300 with speeds of 2.3 Gbps on the Toob and CityFibre networks for high-demand homes, gamers and content creators.

Totsco, UK broadband and fixed-line voice switching platform, has announced price reduction for business switching, with the unit price cut from GBP 1.70 to GBP 1.60 per business customer. In addition, providers with less than 20,000 customers will not charged until live operations of business switching begin.

Ofcom opens investigation into Telegram over CSAM content

UK regulator Ofcom opened an investigation into Telegram under the Online Safety Act to assess whether it is complying with obligations to block users from sharing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on its platform. This comes after Ofcom received information from the Canadian Centre for Child Protection relating to the alleged sharing/presence of CASM on Telegram. Ofcom is now investigating whether Telegram has complied with duties relating to illegal content.

O2 UK switches on 5G+ mobile network in Surrey

Virgin Media O2 has activated its 5G+ Standalone network in the English county of Surrey - covering up to 1.2 million residents across 33 large towns, 48 smaller towns and 194 rural villages. The roll-out is part of the group's GBP 700 million Mobile Transformation Plan. Surrey communities covered by the new 5G+ mobile network include Epsom, Dorking, Haslemere, Guildford, Reigate, Redhill, Weybridge and Staines.

OpenAI to open first permanent London office in 2027

OpenAI will open its first permanent office in London in 2027, located in the Regent Quarter in King's Cross. It has signed a long-term lease agreement with developer Endurance Land for 85,500 sq ft of space in the Jahn Court and Brassworks building. Phoebe Thacker, OpenAI's global head of data research programmes and London site lead, said the investment reflected the company's long-term commitment to the UK.

Talkmobile tops Which? mobile customer satisfaction survey

Talkmobile has topped the latest Which? mobile provider satisfaction survey in the UK with a customer score of 83 percent. It was named by Which? as one of five Recommended Providers along with Giffgaff (79%), Smarty (79%), 1p Mobile (78%) and Lebara Mobile (78%). Talkmobile, Smarty, Asda Mobile (77%) and iD Mobile (73%) were also named Great Value providers.

Jet Connectivity attracts GBP 1.2 mln funding to scale offshore-grade sovereign 5G infrastructure

A UK business has secured GBP 1.2 million in early-stage funding to accelerate production of 'secure and sovereign' 5G network systems tailored to demanding, offshore environments. Bromsgrove-based Jet Connectivity secured the sum in a pre-series A investment round led by Tricapital Angels, a Scottish angel syndicate, with support from unnamed private investors and FSE Group.

UK govt announces first British firms supported by Sovereign AI Unit

The UK government has announced the first British AI firms to be supported through the new GBP 500 million Sovereign AI Unit fund. The unit's first equity investment will be in AI infrastructure start-up Callosum; with six additional start-ups getting access to UK supercomputing capacity - Odyssey, Twig Bio, Doubleword, Cursive, Cosine and Prima Mente. The Sovereign AI Unit is also in talks with around 30 other firms about potential access to the AI Research Resource (AIRR) supercomputer AI network.

Your.Cloud acquires UK-based Pure Cloud Solutions

Amsterdam-based Your.Cloud, European managed services provider, has expanded its UK operations with the acquisition of Tamworth-based IT and telecoms provider Pure Cloud Solutions. The latter operates cross the West Midlands as a full-service provider of connectivity, cloud and managed IT services. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

VodafoneThree's business division has launched a new 5G+ Local Slicing service for enterprise customers, becoming the first UK mobile network operator to offer commercial 5G network slicing. The 5G+ Local Slicing service operates over the group's 5G Standalone network, delivering guaranteed performance over a defined site or local area up to 5 sq km in size. The service is targeted at organisations requiring mission-critical connectivity, such as retailers, universities, transport hubs, healthcare providers

Uswitch research shows record number of switching broadband customers

New research from Uswitch.com shows broadband switching increased 24 percent year-on-year in March as Brits swapped suppliers ahead of April price increases. It shows that 1 in 5 broadband customers have already switched or planned to move provider in the next three months to avoid the price increases. Affordability is now a deciding factor for many UK homes, with 24 percent selecting their broadband provider to get the lowest monthly price.

Channel 4's Chief Content Officer to step down in October

UK broadcaster Channel 4 has announced the departure of Chief Content Officer Ian Katz. He has led the group's content strategy for around nine years and will leave his post in October 2026. Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra described him as an "outstanding creative leader" who delivered "bold and distinctive public service programming". He has been Channel 4's longest-serving head of programming.

BBC to cut up to 2,000 jobs in major restructuring

The BBC plans to cut between 1,800- 2,000 jobs, or around 1 in 10 jobs, as it continues to grapple with significant financial pressures, reports the Financial Times. Staff were informed about the planned cuts at a meeting on the afternoon of15 April, after senior managers were briefed in the morning. The BBC has around 21,508 employees across the UK.

Vinci Energies has announced the acquisition of Scotland-based Novo Technologies, provider of end-to-end telecoms infrastructure solutions, through subsidiary Axians UK. Set up in 2016, Novo delivers mobile network projects for enterprise and carrier customers across the UK.

Redsquid expands presence in education technology sector

Redsquid, UK managed security services provider, has announced the acquisition of Partnership Education, education-focused technology provider. This is the group's 16th acquisition and strengthens its specialist education sector capabilities. Cranfield-based Partnership Education has around 80 employees and provides IT support services to over 170 schools/academies.

UK Prime Minister meets with social media companies

The UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, met with senior leaders of major social media companies at Downing Street on 15 April to push for progress on protecting children from social media harms. The meeting includes representatives from Snap, Meta, YouTube parent Google, X and TikTok. In a statement, the government said it would press for answers from the platforms on what they are doing to keep children safe and respond to the concerns of families.
