GSA survey finds less than quarter of live 5G networks using standalone technology

Less than a quarter of 5G operators have launched standalone 5G networks, underlining the significant room for expansion still in the 5G market, a survey from the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) shows. As of the end of March, there were 95 operators with 5G standalone networks live, up 42 percent from a year earlier, while the total number of 5G networks worldwide rose 14 percent in the same period, to 392.

Viasat has been selected by Australian low-cost airline Jetstar Airways to provide in-flight connectivity for long-range international routes. The contract will see Jetstar roll out the Viasat Amara in-flight connectivity (IFC) platform across its fleet of 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Denmark's GomSpace forms UASAT sovereign satellite venture with Ukraine's Stetman

Danish company GomSpace said it has signed an agreement with Ukrainian partner Stetman to establish a joint venture called UASAT to develop capacity for sovereign satellite communication capabilities for dual use. The first satellite is due for launch in autumn 2026 to provide operational feedback for the next steps in the UASAT roadmap. Further information about the initiative will be disclosed as appropriate and in accordance with current operational security considerations.

Eutelsat has partnered with Co-op Cable to expand direct-to-home (DTH) television and connectivity services across the Caribbean, using its Eutelsat 65 West A (E65WA) satellite. The deal will allow Co-op Cable to offer bundled satellite TV and broadband services, combining video distribution with GEO-based connectivity, to meet growing demand for entertainment and internet access, above all in areas with limited terrestrial infrastructure.

Traficom reports more GNSS interference in spring 2026 near Finnish border with Russia

Finnish transport and communications regulator Traficom has reported a rise in interference affecting satellite navigation (GNSS) and mobile networks during 2026. This particularly affects aviation in southern and central Finland. Disruptions to mobile communications have a localised impact in south-eastern Finland in areas very close to the eastern border with Russia. However, the effects on mobile networks are limited as they have their own, secure time synchronisation arrangements.

Oman's mobile base grows to 8.3 mln on IoT expansion

Oman's mobile subscriptions reached 8.29 million in February, the Times of Oman reported citing data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information. Postpaid mobile services rose by 4 percent to 1.28 million subscriptions, while prepaid recorded a more modest 1 percent increase, reaching 5.34 million. IoT connections surged by 14 percent to 1.65 million.

Amsterdam internet exchange AMS-IX announced the launch of a new service, Time-as-a-Service (TaaS), to help organisations ensure a reliable and redundant time signal for critical operations. Targeting digital processes such as financial transactions, cloud platforms, telecom networks and cybersecurity, the TaaS is provided with the Netherlands metrology institute VSL and is designed to serve as a back-up or alternative for the usual satellite systems used for timekeeping.

MDA Space said its antenna systems have again been selected for the OneWeb LEO (Low Earth Orbit) constellation, which has been part of satellite operator Eutelsat since 2023. Nokia has announced a definitive agreement with Celestial Acquisition Corp to spin off its Space Communication Solutions venture from Nokia Bell Labs as an independent company called Modul8. Argentinian fibre lines up 27% YoY to over 6 mln

The total number of fibre-optic lines in Argentina came to 6.2 million at the end of 2025, up around 1.3 million or 27 percent year on year, according to the latest update from communications regulator Enacom. The rise in FTTH connections saw fibre become the leading fixed broadband technology, overtaking cable, which fell around 7 percent year on year to 5.2 million.

The Azerbaijan government approved a capital increase for the state-owned space agency and satellite operator Azercosmos, reports Report.az. The company's equity is increased by 19.85 percent, from AZN 473.606 million to AZN 567.88 million.

AST SpaceMobile loses latest BlueBird satellite after New Glenn rocket falls short

AST SpaceMobile has lost its latest BlueBird satellite, after a launch with Blue Origin was unable to lift the satellite into high enough orbit. The BlueBird 7 launched on the New Glenn rocket 19 April from Florida. While the satellite separated from the launch vehicle and powered on, the altitude is too low to sustain operations with its on-board thruster technology and will thus be de-orbited. The cost of the satellite is expected to be recovered under the company's insurance policy, AST said.

Tricolor resumes transmission at 56 degrees East

Russian satellite TV operator Tricolor said that it has resumed retransmission of TV channels on a satellite based at 56 degrees East. The satellite Express-AT2, which earlier was in orbit at 140 degrees, has been transferred to 56 degrees. This move is designed to replace the capacity of Express-AT1, which suffered an unexpected failure earlier this year. Tricolor also uses the satellites Express-AMU1 and Eutelsat 36D at 36 degrees East and ABD-2A at 75 degrees East.

Rogers extends satellite-to-mobile coverage to US

Rogers Communications has expanded its satellite-to-mobile coverage to the US, combing the Rogers Satellite service with T-Mobile's T-Satellite service. For Rogers customers, satellite-to-mobile roaming in the US is included with Popular or Ultimate plans with US coverage.

Starlink inks Costa Rica satellite connectivity deals with Liberty and Kolbi

Starlink, the satellite internet division of SpaceX, has reached separate agreements with Costa Rican operators Liberty (Liberty Latin America) and the Kolbi brand of state-owned operator ICE nearly three years after securing a licence in the country. The deal with Liberty will see the operator launch direct-to-device (D2D) mobile satellite connectivity by linking to Starlink's constellation of 650 low Earth orbit satellites.

Nkom warns KSAT of potential NOK 1.5 mln fine for illegal satellite communications from Antarctica and Svalbard

Norwegian telecoms regulator Nkom has warned Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) that it faces a potential fine of NOK 1.5 million for illegally communicating with several satellites from Antarctica and Svalbard. KSAT now has three weeks to respond before the watchdog makes a final decision on the matter.
