Telefonica runs 5G autonomous driving and content consumption trial

Telefonica has claimed the first demonstration of combined autonomous driving and content consumption using 5G technology at a trial conducted in the town of Talavera de la Reina in central Spain. Using the 3.5 GHz band in an open space in central Talavera, the trial featured an autonomous electric vehicle from the company EasyMile fitted with an Ericsson 5G terminal and a ‘fifth screen’ platform from local startup CarMedia Solutions, allowing passengers to enjoy multimedia content, digital services and virtual office applications during the journey.

The company said 5G coverage was provided via a Telefonica mobile unit with a 5G Ericsson antenna, with passengers able to stream and download high-definition content at speeds of 1Gbps, use virtual office applications and enjoy a georeferenced tour of Talavera.

In addition to the multimedia content, Telefonica said autonomous vehicles generate up to 4TB of information a day from sensors, meaning that a high bandwidth is necessary for transferring this data in real time to the network’s edge together with very low latency.

Talavera de la Reina and Segovia are the two Spanish cities Telefonica will be converting into 5G living laboratories over the next three years as part of its ‘5G Technological Cities’ project.
