Telenor, Qatar Telecom win Myanmar licences

Norway-based Telenor and Qatar Telecom have won the contest for new operator licences in Myanmar. The two companies beat off nine other candidates and will compete against the two existing operators in Myanmar. A consortium of France Telecom-Orange and Japanese company Marubeni has been named a back-up candidate if for some reason the two winners do not complete the licensing process, Dow Jones reported. 

The 15-year licences will be issued by September and will carry coverage requirements aimed at serving the country's rural population. The operators will also have to share infrastructure and commit to offering low initial subscription fees. Telenor said it plans to roll out a network based on HSPA and LTE. Commercial services should start in 2014, and it aims to reach nationwide coverage within five years.

Other bidders for the licences were India-based Airtel, Malaysia's Axiata, Digicel, Millicom, Vietnam's Viettel, Singtel in a consortium with local operator M-Tel, MTN and a consortium led by Japan's KDDI and Sumitomo. Vodafone and China Mobile earlier planned to bid for a licence, but withdrew their offer after further evaluation of the investment case.

KDDI, Sumitomo establish joint venture company in Myanmar

Japanese operator KDDI and Sumitomo have established a joint venture company in the Republic of Singapore to jointly conduct telecommunications business in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. KDDI has signed an agreement with Myanma Posts & Telecommunications to jointly provide telecommunications services in the country. To this end, KDDI has set up a joint venture with Sumitomo Corporation in Singapore. This JV then established a subsidiary in Myanmar, through which to conduct the joint operation.

Myanmar Posts and Telecom in talks with 'foreign giant'

Myanmar's mobile base hits 5.55 mln

The number of mobile phone users in Myanmar has reached 5.55 million, representing 10 percent of the population, according to the ICT ministry. Household mobile density currently stands at 1.7. Viom, Telenor in talks on Myanmar network - report

Indian mobile tower operator Viom Networks is reportedly in talks with Telenor to set-up and operate a mobile network in Myanmar. Negotiations on the multi-million dollar deal are expected to be wrapped up soon, the Business Line writes citing unnamed sources involved in the talks. Telenor, as well as Qatari operator Ooredoo, recently won a licence in Myanmar. The deal would see Viom roll out around 5,000 towers covering 60 percent of Myanmar's population in five years.
