Oracle to move headquarters to Austin, Texas

Oracle has decided to move its headquarters from California’s Redwood City in Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas, Bloomberg reported, citing a regulatory filing. The move comes in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the consequent shift to working from home: Texas has lower taxes and a lower cost of living.

The move “means that many of our employees can choose their office location as well as continue to work from home part time or all of the time,” Oracle said in the filing. The company will continue to support its former headquarters and other US offices in Santa Monica (California), Seattle (Washington), Denver (Colorado), Orlando (Florida), and Burlington (Massachusetts). The software maker said it had 135,000 employees at the end of May.

Oracle opened a campus in Austin in 2018, in a bid to recruit a younger and less costly workforce. The company said at the time that the campus would eventually be able to host 10,000 workers. The company also said last year that its largest annual conference, OpenWorld, would not take place in its traditional home, San Francisco, but in Nevada’s Las Vegas.
