Egypt's mobile phone subscription rise 9% in Q3

The number of mobile phone subscriptions in Egypt increased by 8.75 percent year on year to 120.85 million in September 2025 from 111.12 million in 2024, according to statistics from the ICT ministry. Mobile penetration rose to 109.22 percent from 102.14 percent, up by 7.08 percentage points.

KPN reports jump in online meeting traffic during winter storms

KPN said online meeting traffic on its broadband network was 40 percent higher in the past week than the average traffic in the 12 weeks prior. This was attributed to more people working from home due to the snow in the Netherlands. The operator said there was a clear peak in video calls and online meetings, with outgoing internet traffic also up an average 12 percent. On 07 January, upload traffic was over a fifth (22%) higher than a normal Wednesday.

Italian operator Fastweb + Vodafone said the Digital Academy initiative launched by Fastweb back in 2016 has reached the milestone of one million participants since its inception. In terms of economic impact, the numerous free courses offered by the online academy generated a benefit for the country of over EUR 7 million in 2025 alone, resulting in the programme receiving the "Impact Award" at the 2025 CSR and Social Innovation Fair.

Vodafone UK is now selling the Honor Magic8 Series, including the Magic8 Pro and Lite smartphones. The Honor Magic8 Pro is available from GBP 50 per month (GBP 40 upfront), with the Magic8 Lite available from GBP 24 per month (GBP 20 upfront).

AirInternet announced that Ralph Rademakers has become CEO from the start of 2026. He previously led international sales at the Dutch operator and has helped expanded the group's operations with strategic partnerships in Europe. The company specialises in private 4G/5G network connections for business customers. It started in 2016 as a MVNO and has since expanded to 14 countries and over 50 reseller partners.

MTN South Sudan says network upgrade following ongoing service disruptions in Yambio will be completed by the end of January. The disruption was caused by its network modernisation project aimed at upgrading the area to a 4G network. The company extended an apology to affected customers for any inconvenience during this transition.

Vodafone Netherlands has launched three different unlimited mobile data plans. With speeds up to 1 Gbps over 5G, the plans differ in the amount of call minutes and roaming allowances. They are available for both consumer and business customers, with the latter also getting extra security and connectivity options.

Altice revives OXG Glasfaser stake sale process - report

Telecom billionaire Patrick Drahi is reviving the process to sell Altice's 50 percent stake in its German fibre-optic expansion joint venture, OXG Glasfaser, according to a report in the FT. The other 50 percent of the venture is in the hands of Vodafone.  According to the FT, Drahi has sent teaser documents to potential buyers in recent weeks as he is keen to divest the stake to reduce debt amounting to more than USD 50 billion. Ofcom opens formal investigation into X over Grok AI sexual deepfakes

UK online safety regulator Ofcom has launched a formal investigation into X over reports that the Grok AI chatbot is being used to create and share sexualised images of people, including children. Ofcom will investigate whether X is complying with statutory duties under the Online Safety Act to protect users from illegal content.

Finnish and Estonian police complete on-board probe of vessel after Elisa cable damage

Finnish police have announced the departure from Finnish territorial waters of the Fitburg, a cargo ship that had been seized on suspicion of damaging a submarine telecommunications cable belonging to Elisa in the Baltic Sea on 31 December. The Finnish and Estonian police have completed their work on board the vessel, said Risto Lohi of Finland's National Bureau of Investigation. He said Helsinki District Court had remanded a crew member in custody on 11 January pending retrial, and that some members remain

Ooredoo appoints deputy group CFO Assaf to lead Tunisian subsidiary

Eyas Naif Assaf has stepped down from his responsabilities as deputy CFO at Ooredoo group to become CEO of Ooredoo Tunisia. His career has primarily focused on financial roles within the Ooredoo group, including CFO positions at Ooredoo Algeria and Indosat Ooredoo. Net Insight unveils internal pick for CEO role following Fritzon's departure

Andreas Eriksson has been named CEO at Net Insight, taking over immediately from predecessor Crister Fritzon, whose resignation was announced in December. Veon has announced that its Ukrainian subsidiary Kyivstar has launched a 5G test zone in the historical centre of the city of Lviv in Ukraine. This marks Kyivstar's first local pilot 5G project and it is being implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.

Nkom to oversee compliance with EU Cyber Resilience Act in Norway

Norwegian telecoms regulator Nkom said it will expand its remit now that the government is starting to implement the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). Norway is not an EU member but does belong to the European Free Trade Area (EFTA), which is linked to the EU via the EAA. Nkom is already responsible for oversight under the Radio Equipment Directive, which gained new cybersecurity requirements for radio equipment from 01 August 2025.

Vodafone Spain said the Valencia Official College of Pharmacists (MICOF) has awarded it a contract to implement a private communications network that securely connects the 1,239 registered pharmacies in the province of Valencia. Thanks to the deal, valid for five years, Valencia's pharmacies can access a stable, secure and managed private connectivity network that allows for the rapid exchange of information between the various pharmaceutical care points and MICOF's central services.

Smart also reports that this latest evolution aligns academic training with modern telecoms standards, moving beyond simple tool usage to teach students prompt engineering, AI-assisted coding, and data analysis.

Viavi introduces augmented reality RF test feature

Viavi Solutions has introduced a radio signal visualisation overlay powered by augmented reality (AR) technology, designed in partnership with Verizon subsidiary Verizon Wireless.  The new RF Viewer integration is offered through Viavi's existing OneAdvisor 800 Wireless testing device, an all-in-one platform under Viavi's Nitro Wireless brand designed for in-field signal monitoring and validations.

Valoo sponsors FC Haka men's football club and darts junior Riaali

Finnish fibre operator Valoo has announced a three-year agreement to sponsor the Valkeakoski men's professional football club FC Haka as well as a young darts player, Rafael Riaali. FC Haka suffered a relegation at the end of the last playing season from the Veikkausliiga and this has hit the club's finances. Valoo's logo will now appear on players' shirts.
