Arcep consults operators on refarming 1,800MHz to LTE
French telecom regulator Arcep will consult with operators on 7 February about the refarming of 1,800MHz spectrum from 2G to 4G LTE. Bouygues Telecom, which has more 2G capacity than it uses, asked for the measure. The operator is facing opposition from Orange France, SFR and Free. Arcep said it had until the end of March to publish its decision.

Orange appeals decision to refarm 1,800MHz band - report

Orange has lodged an appeal at the Conseil d'Etat administrative court over telecom regulator Arcep's decision to allow rival operator Bouygues Telecom to use 1,800MHz spectrum for LTE, people familiar with the matter told Le Figaro. French telecom regulator Arcep has authorised mobile and broadband operator Bouygues Telecom to deploy LTE in the 1800MHz band from 1 October. The operator asked Arcep in July 2012 to be able to operate LTE service over its 1800MHz spectrum, which is only used for GSM at present. French government agrees to refarm 1800MHz for 4G

The French government has accepted operator Bouygues Telecom's request to refarm 1800MHz 2G frequencies to 4G at a price of around EUR 60 million a year over 20 years, reports Les Echos. French mobile operator SFR has come out against Bouygues Telecom's proposed refarming of 2G spectrum for 4G services. French telecom regulator Arcep plans to launch a consultation in July on refarming the 1800MHz band from 2G to LTE, Les Echos reports. According to unnamed sources, Orange and SFR are not in any hurry, but Bouygues Telecom, which has fewer customers and therefore more available spectrum, wants to do so quickly.
