The Canadian government's plan to introduce more competition into the country's mobile phone market has suffered a setback after major foreign operators decided not to register for the forthcoming mobile spectrum auction, reports Reuters. A total of 15 companies have registered to bid in the 700 MHz spectrum auction scheduled for January 2014. Dvai Ghose, head of research at Canaccord Genuity, said in a research note that the list was positive for the incumbents Rogers Communications, BCE and Telus, and a major disappointment for the government. Ghose said that the government needed now to realise that the market will not support four carriers per market and to rethink its failed mobile policy.
