Dialog Axiata launches Maldives-Sri Lanka submarine cable system with Ooredoo, Dhiraagu

Sri Lankan operator Dialog Axiata has announced the commissioning of the Maldives Sri Lanka Cable system (MSC), enabling the delivery of broadband services. The 840 km long international submarine fiber optic cable system is designed to provide connectivity between Hulhumale in the Republic of Maldives and Mount Lavinia in Sri Lanka. Dialog and its international consortium partners Ooredoo and Dhiraagu in Maldives, together with the supplier HMN, powered the system design and implementation.

The MSC system is the second investment of its kind by Dialog, which follows its investment in the BBG cable (Bay of Bengal Gateway), offering connectivity between the Middle East, the Indian sub-continent and South-East Asia, and was one of the first fiber cable systems to be lit at 100G, linking Sri Lanka and the region.

This project was conducted under the aegis of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), Ministry of Defense (MOD), Sri Lanka Navy, Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Department (CC&CRMD), Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development, Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI), Sri Lanka Customs, Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA) and other relevant regulatory authorities.

HDC extends FTTH connections to apartments in Hulhumale

The Maldives Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has extended FTTH connections to MACL and STELCO apartments as part of the planned expansion of the open access network to new developments in Hulhumale, CorporateMaldives reported. The city-wide FTTH network is a strategic infrastructure asset being established by HDC to create a platform for a smart city ecosystem. Residents living in 7,000 Hiya flats have been using HDC's FTTH connections to obtain internet and cable TV services.

Dhiraagu launches fibre broadband in Fulhadhoo

Maldives operator has Dhiraagu announced the launch of its Fibre Broadband service in B. Fulhadhoo with a special offer for residents there. Under the promotion, customers can obtain a free connection and a free ONT router with every Home Fiber Broadband connection. Dhiraagu's Fibre Broadband service is now available to communities in 87 islands across Maldives, meaning it is accessible by 85 percent of households in the country.

Subex to provide revenue assurance, fraud management system to Dhiraagu

Subex has won a five-year contract from Maldives operator Dhiraagu, to provides its integrated revenue assurance and fraud management (iRAFM) service. Subex said the contract was in the "seven-digit" range but provided no further details. With the deal, Dhiraagu will upgrade its systems and consolidate its standalone assurance functions to better equip itself for 5G services.

Asian operators form Apricot consortium for new regional submarine cable system

Telecom operators in Asia have formed the Apricot consortium with Google to deploy a new submarine cable connecting Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, and Guam. The joint build agreement covers a 12,000-km cable with the latest optical transmission technology and new routing, with capacity of more than 190 Tbps. They expect to complete the project in 2024.

Reliance Jio Infocomm is deploying an international submarine cable system centered on India. Jio, in partnership with several global partners and submarine cable supplier SubCom, is currently deploying two cables to support growth in data demand across the region. The India-Asia-Xpress (IAX) system connects India eastbound to Singapore and beyond, while the India-Europe-Xpress (IEX) system connects India westbound to the Middle East and Europe.

Dialog Axiata's Q1 profit jumps 64% driven by 12% EBITDA growth

Sri Lanka operator Dialog Axiata saw its total revenue reach LKR 32.9 billion in the first quarter of 2021, which represents an increase of 12 percent year-on-year and 2 percent quarter-on-quarter. The operator also reports that all its business segments, namely mobile, fixed-line, digital pay-TV, international and telecom infrastructure, positively contributed to this growth.
