Dutch VoIP lines close in on 4 million mark
The Dutch fixed telephony market grew by almost 27,000 connections during the fourth quarter of 2010 to 6.077 million, despite a 4.6 percent drop in PSTN/ISDN connections to 1.692 million on 31 December 2010, according to Telecompaper's Dutch Fixed Telephony Q4 2010 report. The number of Dutch consumer VoIP subscriptions grew 2.9 percent during the quarter, to 3.986 million at the end of 2010. The growth was driven by cable VoIP, with a 4.4 percent increase during the quarter, while DSL reported a quarterly increase of 0.5 percent compared with an 0.9 percent growth in the third quarter. The number of mobile-only households increased to 1.333 million. The number of Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) users decreased by around 1 percent during the quarter to 398,000 on 31 December 2010. Telecompaper expects the fixed telephony market to grow 1 percent during this year, driven by VoIP growth of 7 percent to around 4.25 million connections. KPN is the largest VoIP provider in the Netherlands with 32.6 percent market share (down 0.4% during the quarter), followed by Ziggo with 29.3 percent and UPC with 18.4 percent, both winning market share during the fourth quarter of 2010.
