EE launches LTE-A in central London

UK mobile operator EE has switched on its 4G+ (LTE-A) network in central London to give customers mobile data speeds of up to 90 Mbps regularly and peaks of 150 Mbps over EE’s 2.6 GHz spectrum. Areas now covered include Shoreditch, Old Street, Southbank, Soho, Westminster and Kensington. The operator aims to offer full LTE-A coverage across Greater London by June next year, followed by the technology’s introduction in the UK’s biggest cities, including Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. EE currently offers two LTE-A compatible devices, the Samsung Alpha and the Samsung Note 4.

The operator has also announced that it now has 6 million 4G (LTE) customers, reaching its year-end target two months ahead of schedule. It has turned on 4G in 19 more towns and cities in October, with Warwick being the 300th 4G town to go live. EE’s 4G network now covers over 75 percent of the population. The company’s double speed 4G is also expanding. The technology offers speeds up to 60 Mbps and is now available in 20 towns and cities and to over half of the population. The double speed 4G service will cover 20 more towns and cities by year-end.
