Facebook unveils enhanced messaging service
Facebook announced an expansion of its messaging services, including the addition of an @facebook.com mail service. The social network will offer "seamless messaging", allowing users to include SMS, chat, e-mail and Facebook Messages all in one inbox and real-time stream, and choose themselves how they want to view the messages. This new "social inbox" will only include messages from friends and their friends; all other messages will be sent to an "other" folder to be looked at separately. Customers can also now sign up for an @facebook.com e-mail address. Facebook emphasized that the new "Messages is not e-mail". There are no subject lines and no ability to cc or bcc other contacts on a mail. The company said the service is more closely modelled on chat in order to reduce the number of things a user needs to do to send a message and make the service "more like a conversation".
