Fifth of BlackBerry 10 apps ported from Android

After announcing last week that there were 100,000 BlackBerry 10 apps available, the company’s vice president for global alliances and business development, Martyn Mallick, told AllThingsD that around 20 percent of them are Android apps using a BlackBerry 10 emulation engine.

Amazon added BlackBerry-specific features to its Kindle app for Android, eBay is adding support for push notifications, and other developers are adapting their Android app with BlackBerry 10 features such as BlackBerry Hub. Netflix, Instagram and other big name developers not announced plans for BlackBerry 10 versions of their apps.

The emulation engine gave developers an “on-ramp” to get onto the platform, Mallick said, and some are now committing to a native app, which is the longer term goal. BlackBerry offers a USD 10,000 guarantee to incite developers to build native BlackBerry apps and to avoid fragmentation has promised that the six new handsets due to be released in the next 12 months will use one of two screen sizes.
