French operators see jump in SMS volumes during Facebook outage
Bouygues Telecom, SFR and Orange have all experienced a significant rise in SMS traffic during the 6-hour service outage that impacted social media company Facebook on 04 October, reports Les Echos. On the Orange network, the volume of texts doubled, while MMS messages went up by 35 percent.

MTS says Facebook failure caused sharp rises in voice and SMS traffic

Russian operator MTS has announced that SMS and voice traffic suddenly soared in the evening of 04 October, during the period when Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp faced technological problems. SMS traffic jumped by 460 percent, duration of calls increased by 250 percent by comparison to analogous periods within few earlier days.

Messaging app Telegram gained over 70 million new users during Facebook's outage on 4 October, CEO Pavel Durov told Reuters. Facebook blamed its 6-hour long outage on faulty configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between its data centres, causing issues that interrupted its communication. The glitch affected 3.5 billion users of services such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
