ITV and the BBC have signed an agreement to go ahead with the launch of the BritBox subscription streaming service in the UK in the fourth quarter of this year. The service will cost GBP 5.99 per month for HD access across multiple screens and devices, which the companies noted is less than other streaming services.
BritBox will carry a range of catalogue content from the UK's top two broadcasters, including what they say is the largest collection of British boxsets (full series). In addition, BritBox is commissioning its own original series, with the first output expected ready in 2020.
All programmes will be available ad-free, on-demand. Initial series available will include recent programmes such as Love Island, Famalam, Cleaning Up and Gentleman Jack as well as older classics like Gavin & Stacey, Victoria, Happy Valley, Broadchurch, Les Miserables, The Office and Benidorm.
The companies said they are in talks to add content from other British broadcasters and production companies. This will include a variety of genres, including drama, crime thrillers, comedy, documentaries, reality hits and entertainment.
The broadcasters already work together on the BritBox service for the North America market. They said they see demand in the UK for a similar, "uniquely British" service.
ITV majority shareholder
BritBox will be an ITV-controlled venture, but as a founding partner, the BBC will contribute to the development and strategic direction of the venture. ITV initially holds 90 percent and the BBC 10 percent of the equity. The BBC has an option to acquire additional shares over time up to 25 percent in total, and ITV will have the ability to bring additional investors on board.
BritBox will have its own dedicated management team led by Reemah Sakaan, Group Director ITV SVOD, responsible for making editorial decisions about the service content while also ensuring alignment with ITV's and the BBC's branding and editorial policies.
The service will be delivered over-the-top on internet connections. ITV said the companies are in talks with other potential distribution partners.
