KPN plans CDMA450 network for M2M services

Dutch operator KPN is rolling out a CDMA450 network, which it plans to use for M2M services. KPN said the CDMA450 technology offers several benefits particularly suited for M2M: high speeds and a limited number of base stations needed for national coverage and penetrating inside buildings. KPN acquired the necessary radio frequencies with the takeover of broadcast services group Nozema Services in 2005. The frequency licences carry requirements for roll-out and commercial services coverage. The licence is also limited to so-called PAMR services, or services for closed-user groups rather than open networks. A spokesman said KPN will meet these requirements. The coverage requirement will be measured again at the end of the year, when the services are expected to be available in all provinces.
