Magic Leap expands to Korea in partnership with SK Telecom
Magic Leap has signed a partnership agreement with South Korean operator SK Telecom. SK Telecom will be the exclusive telecommunications partner of Magic Leap in Korea. Under the terms of the deal, Magic Leap and SK Telecom plan to create an immersive media environment utilizing Magic Leap’s devices, such as its spatial computing platform dubbed ‘Magic Leap One’, and SK Telecom’s 5G network. The two companies will also work together to commercialize 5G use cases and jointly develop related AR technologies, services, and business models.

SK Telecom and Magic Leap plan to foster the development of AR content and provide support for the developer and creator communities who are helping to build out the AR ecosystem. SK Telecom will introduce Magic Leap to the Korean market by showcasing the device in its stores and creating exclusive content for the Magic Leap platform. SK Telecom will also host and provide support for accelerators or hackathons focused on creating content for and furthering the Magic Leap platform.

Magic Leap has stopped selling its Magic Leap 1 AR headset, but will continue to support the device until 31 December 2024, according to the product's end-of-life FAQs page. The company informed customers of the change via email. From that date also, Magic Leap 1 cloud services will no longer be available, core functionality will reach end-of-life, and the Magic Leap 1 device and apps will cease to function.

AR start-up MagicLeap to explore sale

US-based maker of augmented reality glasses Magic Leap is considering multiple strategic options that include selling itself, according to a report by Bloomberg. The company is collaborating with an advisor to look at options such as finding a partner or selling a stake in the company ahead of a potential listing. Magic Leap expects to get USD 10 billion from a potential buyer. The company's representatives declined to comment.

NTT Docomo invests in Magic Leap, to be exclusive Japan distributor

The mixed reality device maker Magic Leap has a new investor from the telecom sector. Japan's NTT Docomo has agreed to invest USD 280 million in the company and be its exclusive distributor in Japan, in a deal similar to Magic Leap's arrangements with AT&T and SK Telecom.

SK Telecom to launch VR racing game for 5G smartphones in H1

South Korean operator SK Telecom has announced that it will launch a virtual reality (VR) racing game for 5G smartphones in the first half of this year. SK Telecom signed a licensing agreement with game developer Nexon to use three of its online games, namely KartRider, Crazy Arcade and Bubble Fighter, for the development of its VR game, Yonhap news agency reports. SK Telecom also plans to sign various agreements with global game developers to create 5G-based games during the Mobile World Congress in Barcel

South Korean operator SK Telecom has launched the 'oksusu Social VR' app. The mobile social VR app is designed to enable users to interact with each other while jointly watching OTT content such as sports games, movies and TV shows in the same virtual environment.

AT&T brings connectivity, content to Magic Leap

AT&T announced at the Magic Leap conference in LA that it plans to bring connectivity and content to the Magic Leap mixed reality platform. This includes the launch of a 5G test-zone on the Magic Leap campus in Plantation, Florida in 2019 and a DirecTV app for the platform. Magic Leap also announced that its first device is now available for sale throughout the US, after a limited launch in August.

Magic Leap starts sales of first mixed reality set

The mixed reality start-up Magic Leap has started shipping its first product. The Magic Leap One Creators Edition is available in selected parts of the US starting at USD 2,295 and includes the Lightwear headset, Lightpack computing pack and Control handheld input device.
