Millicom appoints Gordon as CEO of Africa division

Millicom announced the appointment of Cynthia Gordon as Executive Vice President and CEO of its Africa Division. Gordon takes up the role on 21 September. She will be responsible for leading the company's operations in Tanzania, Ghana, DRC, Senegal, Rwanda and Chad. Gordon will report directly to Millicom's CEO and will lead a newly created Africa Executive Committee to oversee and drive Millicom's African operations.

Gordon has more than 20 years of telecoms experience, leading mobile, broadband and fixed line operations in emerging markets across Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Russia. She developed her Africa experience while at Orange, where she was Vice-President of Partnerships and Emerging Markets, and Ooredoo, where she was Chief Commercial Officer. She will remain on the board of commissioners of Ooredoo's largest operating company, Indosat.

Millicom proposes Garcia Fernandez as new director

Luxembourg-based Millicom announced that its Nomination Committee proposed that Jose Miguel Garcia Fernandez be elected as a new director of its board at the company's annual general meeting to be held on 17 May. Garcia Fernandez was previously Co-CEO of Orange Spain and CEO of Spanish operator Jazztel between 2006 and 2015, having recently stepped down following Orange's takeover of Jazztel. He previously held various managerial positions at Cable & Wireless from 2000-2006 including CEO of UK & Ireland.

Millicom revenues down 2% in Q3 on forex pressure

Millicom reported a drop in third-quarter revenues of 2.0 percent to USD 1.641 billion, hurt by negative currency effects, particularly in Colombia. Organic revenue was still up 7.2 percent, including a 6.2 percent increase in Latin America and 11.9 percent rise in Africa. Ooredoo Qatar appoints Hameed as acting CCO

Ooredoo Qatar has appointed Haroon Shahul Hameed as acting chief commercial officer after the resignation of Cynthia Gordon. Hameed's appointment was effective from 21 September. Millicom posts Q2 loss, organic revenue still up 9%

Millicom reported second-quarter revenues up 18 percent year-on-year to USD 1.704 billion, while EBITDA rose 17 percent to USD 561 million. Growth came from its acquisition of Une in Colombia as well as a 9 percent increase in organic sales. Millicom buys 85% stake in Zantel with plans to deploy 4G

Millicom has agreed to buy an 85 percent stake in Tanzanian operator Zanzibar Telecom (Zantel) from the Etisalat Group. Tigo Senegal ready for mobile number portability

Senegal's mobile number portability (MNP) system, promised by regulator ARTP director general Abdou Karim Sall for the end of February, has yet to come into operation. Mobile operator Tigo Senegal CEO Diego Cambreros told Nouvel Horizon weekly that the company and market are ready for MNP.
