NGMN Alliance issues report on reducing energy in mobile networks

The Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance has released a new paper looking at ways to reduce the energy consumption of mobile networks. The 'Green Future Networks: Network Energy Efficiency' publication looks at existing and expected future energy-saving features and their potential when rolled out in the networks.

Features covered include automatic wake-up/sleep modes, virtualisation technology, and efficient power amplifiers for massive MIMO. The study covers energy usage at the levels of base station equipment, site and the network and looks at elements such as spectral efficiency of the 5G air interface, renewable energy for on- and off-grid sites, smart batteries, free and liquid cooling solutions in technical sites and the benefits of AI-based solutions for reducing energy.

This is the third deliverable in the NGMN Green Future Networks project after two papers released in July, and a new publication is planned for later this month on metering in sustainable networks. Interested parties are invited to contact the NGMN Office for further information and details on how to join the industry alliance.
