Nowo, Eleven Sports take TV service nationwide with new IP box

Portuguese cable operator Nowo is taking its TV service nationwide with the launch of a new IPTV service. The move follows an exclusive deal with Eleven Sports, which has rights to top international football in Portugal.

The new TV box costs EUR 79.99 and works with any internet connection, anywhere in the EU. Nowo recommends a speed of at least 10 Mbps, and the box can connect over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. 

The TV service costs EUR 12.99 for 33 channels or EUR 19.99 for 82 channels. Customers can also add premium channels such as BTV, Sport TV, Eleven Sports, TVCine & TVSeries and Globo Now as well as access a VoD service and features such as recording and a 7-day catch-up archive, 

Nowo will be promoting the service in an ad campaign with the tagline 'A Nowo IP Box goes everywhere'.

Spanish operator MasMovil is preparing to enter the Portuguese market. The company has reached an agreement to acquire a stake in the Portuguese operators Nowo and Oni from KKR for EUR 15 million, market sources told Spanish paper El Economista. The Portuguese competition regulator has already been notified of the transaction, the report said.

Eleven Sports launches on Meo, Nos and Vodafone in Portugal

The Eleven Sports premium TV channels are now available for customers of all telecom operators in Portugal. Meo, Nos and Vodafone Portugal customers can subscribe for EUR 9.99 to the Eleven Sports channels. They join Nowo customers, who were the first to access the premium sports channels from August 2018, when the service launched in Portugal.

Sport TV stops distribution on Nowo

Portuguese premium sports platform Sport TV announced it will no longer distribute its channels on cable TV operator Nowo, justifying its decision with the "high debt" outstanding at Nowo, reports Jornal de Negocios. For its part, Nowo accused Sport TV of unilaterally cancelling its services, because the operator did not accept the new conditions presented by the content provider, namely a 15 percent increase in the costs of its services.

The company entered Portugal earlier this year and has the exclusive transmission rights for the UEFA Champions league and the national football leagues of Spain, France and Germany, among others. The number of subscribers to Eleven Sports TV channels, which are only available via operator Nowo, has not been made public.

Eleven Sports disappointed over lack of distribution contracts

Pedro Mendonca Pinto, the non-executive director of Eleven Sports in Portugal, has expressed his surprise and disappointment that distribution agreements have not yet been reached with the main operators regarding the distribution of its premium sports channels. Speaking to Jornal Economico, he launched an appeal to the operators, stressing that "customers and content" are the priority.

Altice Portugal seeks insolvency of Nowo's Oni

Altice Portugal has requested the insolvency of Oni, a wholesaler controlled by Nowo, the operator that has an agreement with Eleven Sports for the distribution of football rights such as the Champions League and the Spanish league. This request for insolvency has formally been submitted in Lisbon and concerns debt exceeding EUR 6 million, according to Economia Online. Eleven Sports wins NFL rights for Portugal

After the Champions League and the Spanish football league, Eleven Sports reinforced its portfolio for Portugal with live NFL rights, reports Jornal de Negocios. The partnership with NFL starts on 7 September with the opening game of the season that opposes the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons. Nowo says it "deserved the best attention and were answered in a timely manner". In 12 days, the operator will launch the two channels of Eleven Sports that will transmit the Champions League and the Spanish league, among other exclusive sports, in Portugal.
