Powermat announced it's joining the Wireless Power Consortium, backer of the rival wireless charging standard Qi. Powermat will contribute its technology and expertise to the WPC, while maintaining backwards compatibility to the existing Qi ecosystem.
The news sees the world of wireless charging uniting further behind the Qi standard. Powermat noted that Apple's adoption of Qi for the latest iPhones is "evidence of its success". Qi is also supported by companies such as Samsung, LG Electronics, Google and Delphi, with more than 360 members in the WPC.
Powermat had helped start an alternative association, the Power Matters Alliance, to develop an ecosystem for its inductive and resonant power transfer technology. Early adopters included Starbucks, Duracell and AT&T.
