Qualcomm, Uplus, LG deploy 5G mmWave network in South Korea

Qualcomm Technologies, South Korean operator LG Uplus and LG Electronics have deployed a 5G mmWave network using a commercial 5G smartphone at the Kumoh National Institute of Technology (KIT). The 5G mmWave network is designed to enable new services for KIT employees, professors and students, showcasing the technology’s ability to power a Smart Campus model for education.

The launch also represents a step toward the commercialization of 5G mmWave in South Korea, scheduled for 2021. The Smart Campus services will be accessible through the LG Uplus 28 GHz 5G mmWave network on a commercial smartphone by LG Electronics, which is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System.

The 5G mmWave deployment at the KIT is expected to enable the use of a Virtual Desktop environment, so that the KIT community can work from a 5G mmWave smartphone or laptop anytime, anywhere on campus. The KIT also plans to use 5G technology to establish remote classes with 2-way communication between students and professors. This is designed to facilitate synergies in research and development among the industry and academic groups, while also supporting campus safety with connected artificial intelligence-powered cameras.
