Rovio doubles turnover, headcount in 2012

Finnish mobile game developer Rovio Entertainment, creator of Angry Birds, doubled revenues to EUR 152.2 million and increased EBIT 64 percent to EUR 76.8 million in 2012. Rovio saw healthy growth in its games and consumer products units, with the latter growing threefold. Robio also saw good progress in entertainment.

Game revenues include paid games, virtual goods and advertising. The record-breaking year saw Rovio more than double headcount to 518, open new offices and start up a unit focusing on new business ventures. The company launched four major games across all platforms in 2012, with an download peak of over 1 billion games in May and 263 million active monthly users. The sale of new devices and content remain the main drivers for mobile games and viewers of the Angry Birds Toons channel. Rovio made a EUR 55.5 million net profit last year, up on EUR 35.4 million in 2011.

Describing the start of 2013 as ‘stellar, CEO Mikael Hed said the company would continue to pursue creating new IP and exploring opportunities with third parties. Rovio will continue to invest heavily to defend its brand around the world.
