Singtel launches Unboxed Lite 5G multimedia kiosks

Singapore operator Singtel has deployed 5G connectivity at its iconic payphone booths at Tong Building on Orchard Road. Named ‘Unboxed Lite’, the payphone booths have been transformed into multimedia kiosks, providing round-the-clock access to Singtel services and 5G-powered Wi-Fi connections.

At Unboxed Lite locations, consumers will have access to Singtel’s 5G services, and Wi-Fi connections powered by Singtel’s triple-band 5G which uses 3.5Ghz, 28Ghz and 2100Mhz frequencies. Smartphone users will be able to connect to the 5G-powered WiFi for free to access Singtel 5G speeds, as well as streaming of 4K content from Love Nature.

Unboxed Lite features self-service kiosks powered by mmWave 5G and Singtel’s AI assistant Stella. It offers customers a 24/7 contactless experience for prepaid card purchases and top-ups, Singtel mobile, fibre broadband and TV subscription sign-ups, instant SIM card replacements and more.

To complement its existing 5G coverage, Singtel also reports it has recently launched mmWave 5G in several locations across the island, including Orchard Road, the Padang area and Marina Bay Sands Expo.

By aggregating the 5G mmWaves through four carriers and balancing the upload and download patterns, Singtel reports it achieved these speeds on its network using a test device powered by Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System.

Singapore operator Singtel has expanded its 5G network coverage, bringing 5G services indoors at VivoCity, the largest mall in Singapore. Running on 3.5GHz spectrum and small cell radio dot technology, Singtel's 5G network will provide users with speeds of up to 1.2Gbps whether they are indoors or outdoors at VivoCity.

Singtel to launch 5G mobile edge computing on Microsoft Azure Stack

Singtel said it's launching 5G edge compute infrastructure for enterprises, with Microsoft Azure Stack as one of the options to deliver 5G applications. Enterprises will be able to use Singtel's Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) infrastructure to process applications like autonomous guided vehicles, drones, robots, virtual, augmented or mixed reality closer to their end-users.

Singapore operator M1 and Nokia have signed a partnership agreement to deploy Nokia's cloud-native core software in support Singapore's 5G standalone network launch in 2021. M1 will adopt the Nokia 5G standalone Core, developed with open-source and licensed software components, and consisting mainly of 5G cloud-native Core and Cloud Packet Core software.
