Spanish mobile market revenues fall 6.2% in 2011
Spanish mobile operator service revenues reached EUR 15.1 billion in 2011, down 6.2 percent year-on-year, according to a report from independent market researcher Telecompaper. The decline was mainly due to decreasing voice revenues, impacted by lower mobile termination rates, increased competition, and the weak economy, contributing to lower consumption. Non-voice services, including SMS and data, continued to grow, reaching 24 percent of total service revenues versus 20 percent in 2010. The report further shows that Movistar and Vodafone had lower revenues in 2011 compared to 2010, while Orange and Yoigo saw their mobile service revenues and market shares increase. Spain ended 2011 with 57.3 million mobile lines, which represents an increase of 2.4 percent versus December 2011. All domestic operators, except Movistar, increased their mobile user bases, annually and quarterly. Mobile penetration grew to 124 percent at 31 December 2011 from 121 percent in 2010. The study indicates that Orange and Yoigo gained subscriber market share from bigger players Movistar and Vodafone. Telecompaper expects the Spanish mobile market to continue the downward trend in 2012, dropping an estimated 1-3 percent to around EUR 14.5-14.8 billion in annual revenues.
