Telkom South Africa and SABC launch new streaming service TelkomONE

Telkom South Africa has partnered with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to launch a new online streaming service named TelkomONE. The five-year partnership is a digital carriage agreement for the SABC and will include TV programmes and radio on a single online platform. TelkomONE will stream SABC television channels 1, 2, Sport, and Education as well as all nineteen SABC radio stations. 

The SABC will provide its content to Telkom on a non-exclusive basis. In exchange, the SABC will receive a carriage licence fee as well as share in the advertising revenue generated by TelkomONE. Customers can browse the catalogue and register for free to access limited material including news and entertainment, or subscribe to one of the AMP subscription packages with music, short films, TV serials, and the free output default upon registration.

Users can pay via prepaid airtime, voucher, credit card, wallet and Add to Bill for contract customers. Pricing for the new TelkomONE streaming service's Amp subscriptions range from ZAR 7 for 90 MB data for TelkomONE Amp Daily service to ZAR 49 for 1,800 MB data for TelkomONE Amp Monthly.

Telkom added that the streaming service will offer other content in addition to the SABC channels – including comedy and lifestyle shows, and music.

A report from the Government Communications and Information System on the Cabinet meeting said that the Bill proposes reforms to SABC's funding model and the TV licensing system.

Telkom South Africa says TelkomONE usage surpasses expectations

Telkom South Africa says usage of its new TelkomONE online video and audio streaming service has surpassed its expectations. Launched in November 2020, TelkomONE provides SABC and news channels, and paid-for films and TV shows that primarily consist of local reality programming. It was unable to provide figures on users or paying subscribers because it is in a closed period, but said it was pleased with consistent growth across the platform, both in terms of registrations and content engagement.

Fuse Media said these agreements are early innings in its global expansion. TelkomONE awards ZAR 300,000 in web series production competition

South African streaming service TelkomONE is set to invest ZAR 300,000 to produce three web series to raise subscriptions for the over-the-top (OTT) platform, ITWeb reported. It will work with three local producers who were selected in a content creation competition it hosted a few weeks ago. The winners will each receive a ZAR 100,000 cash injection to produce a full web-series for the OTT platform.

MultiChoice's standalone DStv streaming in South Africa goes live

MultiChoice's DStv has launched its standalone streaming service, allowing viewers to watch the full DStv range without a satellite connection, BusinessTech reported. The new streaming-only packages are available on a month-to-month basis at prices from ZAR 29 for DStv EasyView to ZAR 819 for DStv Premium. Existing and new customers can watch DStv on a mobile phone, tablet, gaming console or Smart TV, which should be linked to a consistent, high-speed internet connection.

South Africa's Department of Communications and Digital Technologies is working to enforce 30 percent local content on video-on-demand services including Netflix and Showmax, in order to promote local content and languages. In a recently drafted white paper presented to parliament, streaming platforms will be mandated to offer at least 30 percent South African content.

Telkom South Africa revenue falls marginally in H1 as earnings increase

Telkom South Africa said its revenue decreased by 0.4 percent to ZAR 21.4 billion for the first six months to 30 September compared with a year earlier amid difficult trading conditions brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. EBITDA grew 6.3 percent to ZAR 5.9 billion and the EBITDA margin expanded by 1.7 percentage points to 27.6 percent, despite the decline in the higher margin fixed voice revenue underpinned by sustainable cost management. Headline earnings per share (HEPS) grew by 25.4 percent to ZAR 2.17

SABC to launch own streaming service by early 2021

The South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is finalising plans to bring out its own streaming platform and services in the early part of 2021. Spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo told Channel24 that it is planning to launch a video and audio streaming service in line with changing industry trends and consumer needs. At this stage, Seapolelo said, the SABC is not in a position to provide more detail, due to the commercial sensitivity of the information.

Netflix starts offering Mobile and Mobile+ subscriptions in South Africa

Netflix has launched two new subscription plans in South Africa that are aimed specifically at mobile devices, Mybroadband reported. The Mobile plan costs ZAR 39 per month and Mobile+ costs ZAR 59. Netflix seems to be rolling out these packages locally, and visitors to Netflix's sign-up page may be presented with either option.
