UPC to launch live sports channel in Switzerland

UPC has confirmed the launch of a new live sports channel in Switzerland called MySports. The channel will show five season of Swiss ice hockey games from 2017/2018, offering live sports content from summer 2017. It will be broadcast in three languages and offer both basic and premium packages.

It will be distributed nationwide through Suissedigital partners including Quickline Group, net+ and Citycable in Lausanne. It will also be available to UPC customers and those of partners on mobile via handset or tablet.

Swisscom has filed a competition complaint against rival UPC for failure to open up its exclusive hockey TV rights to all operators. Watson.ch reports that the complaint to Weko alleges abuse of UPC's dominant market position, as it has not offered its new TV channel MySports to all pay-TV operators. UPC Switzerland's live sports channel MySports team named Swiss sports presenter Steffi Buchli as director of Programming, presenter and the public face of the channel. Switching to UPC from Swiss Television, she will take on responsibility for programming on the new Swiss sports channel, MySports. Suissedigital, MySports to sponsor amateur ice hockey

Swiss network operator association Suissedigital announced it's the new sponsor of the country's biggest amateur ice hockey league. It will be called the MySports League, after the group's new sports channel launching this summer. In addition to the MySports League, Suissedigital will support the national B league. Both sponsoring agreements begin with the 2017/18 season and last five years. Professional ice hockey will be one of the main sports featured on MySports.

Cable company UPC has appointed editors-in-chief for the new mySports Swiss sports channel, MySports: Stephan Liniger for German-speaking Switzerland and Alex Burkhalter for French-speaking Switzerland. UPC takes over fibre-optic network in Ermatingen

Cable network operator UPC has purchased the fibre-optic cable network in Ermatingen, in the Swiss canton of Thurgau. The network was sold by Regionalantenne Ermatingen (RAE) to UPC with effect from 01 July 2016. RAE has been a UPC partner since 1989, so nothing will change for customers as a result of the sale.

Quickline reports 1st-half revenue up 8.6%

Swiss cable network group Quickline has reported revenue up 8.6 percent year-on-year to CHF 115 million for 1st-half 2016, from CHF 106 million a year earlier. Telephony customers increased by 11.7 percent to 102,800, with internet customers up 6.8 percent to 151,600. The TV customer base was down 3.3 percent year-on-year to 356,000. The number of services taken by customers reached 384,600 at end-June, up 8.4 percent from 354,900 a year earlier, driven by internet, mobile and interactive TV services.

UPC Switzerland grows in mobile, loses fixed customers

Swiss cable operator UPC reported second-quarter revenue up 1.1 percent year-on-year to CHF 340 million. Growth was led by its expansion in the mobile market, where revenues grew to CHF 12.7 million from CHF 3.1 million a year ago. Mobile customers were up 36 percent year-on-year and by 15,000 in the quarter to 56,600 in Switzerland. Total revenue-generating units fell by 20,400 in the three months to 2.497 million in Switzerland, which the company said was due to lower growth as its higher-priced portfolio

UPC employees approve labour agreement

Cable operator UPC and Swiss trade union Syndicom have negotiated the terms of a collective labour agreement. The agreement was put to members for a vote and has been approved by almost 70 percent of the 550 employees who voted. The agreement outlines terms for working hours, holidays, dealing with overtime, notice periods, and professional development of employees.
