Egypt contracts with Samsung to build tablet factory in Beni Suef

Egypt has confirmed an agreement with Samsung to manufacture tablets to be used by the ministry of education for educational purposes. The ICT Minister Amr Talaat said that the ministry was keen to implant tablet manufacturing in Egypt through attracting companies to build and run tablet factories, transfer expertise and skills, and train local manpower. 

Talaat said Samsung will manufacture tablets in its new factory that will be built in Beni Suef, with a USD 30 million investment. The factory will create over 500 job opportunities. Under the contract, 1,000 technicians will be trained on the latest technology. Building the new factory is to be completed in March 2022, when the manufacturing process will start.

Samsung has agreed to set up a new mobile phone factory in Egypt, The National reported, citing the ICT ministry. It will be located in the Beni Suef governorate south of Cairo and construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2023. It will produce the latest handset versions and create 1,400 direct and indirect job opportunities, especially in Upper Egypt.

The Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) and Oppo have signed an MoU to establish a mobile factory in Egypt with investments worth USD 20 million. The deal is part of the initiative by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi under the title of "Egypt produces electronics", ITIDA said. The initiative aims to upgrade the electronics industry to support the national economy and increase Egyptian exports while supplying the local market with its needs.

Egyptian govt signs deal with Aswan governorate for mobile tower construction and digital projects

The Egyptian ICT ministry has signed two cooperation protocols and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build digital capacities, support entrepreneurship in Aswan governorate, and develop the information infrastructure in villages there under the "Decent Life" initiative. ICT minister  Amr Talaat said that the ministry is providing technical support to implement a project in Aswan governorate to launch more than 80 services via mobile applications for the public there.

The Egyptian government has signed an agreement with Samsung to manufacture educational tablets in the country, as part of a government strategy to localise the technology sector, iAfrikan reported. Samsung had made previous offers to establish a tablet factory in Egypt with investments of about USD 30 million, which sources say is the company's estimated investment in the plant that will be set up to produce the devices under the agreement.

Samsung is planning to invest nearly USD 84 million in Egypt over the next five years to take advantage of new incentives announced by the government, Reuters reported. About USD 23 million will be invested in 2020 by Samsung Egypt, said Mohammed Abdul Wahab, CEO of the state-run General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI). He said the company intends to invest the sum to build a new production unit for computer screens.
