German mobile revenues drop 0.9% to EUR 5 bln in Q3
The German mobile industry generated EUR 5.03 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2011, down by 0.9 percent compared to the same quarter last year and up 3.8 percent compared to the second quarter of 2011, according to Telecompaper's latest report on the German mobile market. Growth in revenues from mobile data and messaging were not able to offset the year-on-year decrease in voice revenues. The drop in voice revenues was mainly caused by a 50 percent cut in mobile termination rates by German regulator BNA in December 2010. In terms of mobile services revenue, Telekom Deutschland had the largest market share with almost 35 percent, closely followed by Vodafone Germany. E-Plus was in third place with 18 points less than the market leader, and O2 Germany was just behind in fourth. The number of mobile customers increased by 2.0 percent or 2.2 million net additions compared with the second quarter of this year, ending September at 112.03 million. The share of prepaid customers grew to 55.9 percent. Vodafone Germany had the most customers of all German operators with almost 33 percent, followed by Telekom Deutschland with slightly more than 31 percent, E-Plus with almost 20 percent and O2 Germany at just over 16 percent. For the full year, Telecompaper expects German mobile services revenue to grow by 0.5-0.7 percent to around EUR 19.8 billion. The number of mobile connections is expected to reach around 113.5 million at the end of December, up 4.3 percent year-on-year.
