Huawei launches EUR 5/mth mobile video service in Spain and Italy

China’s Huawei has launched a Netflix-style video streaming service in Spain and Italy, offering a catalogue of subscription on demand films and series for Huawei and Honor-branded smartphones and tablets at a cost of EUR 4.99 a month for the VIP subscription. Huawei Video is available as a pre-installed app on the company’s mobile devices and comes with free-of-charge content (mostly trailers and documentaries), the Huawei VIP monthly subscription with content from partners RTVE, PlayZ, Atresmedia, Flooxer and iab.es, as well as a catalogue of on-demand films and series available to rent for 48 hours at a cost of EUR 2.99 each or EUR 1.99 for VIP subscribers.

The company added that some titles will be available in 4K quality and the service is being promoted with a 1-month free trial. However, the service will initially be limited to owners of Huawei and Honor devices with the company's EMUI 5.x and higher OS.

Huawei has teamed up with the Retina digital news section of Spanish daily El Pais and Ironhack to host the country's first coding hackathon focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Up to 11 teams of four are invited to take part in the challenge to come up with projects that directly contribute to the welfare and development of society based on AI technology. The 12-hour event will take place on 02 December at Madrid's Matadero centre and the winning team will be awarded EUR 3,000 plus a Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Atresmedia's international reach tops 55 mln homes

Spanish commercial broadcaster Atresmedia has almost quadrupled its international market penetration in the past 5 years to reach a total of 55 million homes, triple its domestic reach, reports El Economista, citing Atresmedia Internacional director general Mar Martinez Raposo. The company is now the European private TV operator with the largest penetration in the international TV market, having increased its market share from just 15 million in 2013, said the report.

Spanish commercial broadcaster Atresmedia and AMC Networks International Southern Europe have announced plans to launch a package of 7 Spanish-language TV channels for the European market. The package includes AMC's Canal Cocina (cooking), Canal Decasa (lifestyle), Sol Musica (Spanish music) and Somos (classic Spanish cinema) channel as well as Atresmedia's Atrescine (contemporary Spanish cinema), Atreseries (series) and Antena 3 Internacional (news and entertainment) channels.

Samsung, Huawei lead Spain smartphone sales in Q1

Samsung just pipped Huawei as the top-selling smartphone brand in Spain in the first quarter of 2018, accounting for 23.9 percent of all devices sold, down 7.1 percent from a year earlier, according to the latest smartphone sales data from Canalys. Huawei grows to fifth of EU5 smartphone sales, Xiaomi becomes 4th biggest brand

Huawei has grown its share of smartphone sales in Europe's five largest markets to 19.0 percent in the first quarter, according to the latest data from Kantar. The Chinese company's share has jumped from 14.4 percent a year ago, putting it in third place behind Apple and Samsung. Meanwhile Xiaomi has propelled itself to fourth place with a 4.4 percent share in Q1, led by its expansion in Spain and Italy.

Huawei tops Spain phone ranking as sales fall - study

Huawei was the top-selling smartphone brand in Spain in February, a month that saw sales plummet 34.3 percent year on year, reports Xataka Movil, citing a study from market researcher Ideas Originales. The Chinese handset maker accounted for 26.3 percent of sales, ahead of Samsung with 24.5 percent, Apple with 11.4 percent, BQ with 7.0 percent and LG with 6.2 percent.
