Verizon to help San Jose prepare for 5G services with apps, fibre, small cells and money

The mayor of San Jose in California said the city has cut a deal with Verizon to improve its IT infrastructure and support a state-of-the-art, digitally connected community for businesses, residents and visitors. May Sam Liccardo said that under the deal, Verizon will deploy fibre and small cells, make a significant monetary investment in the city’s Digital Inclusion Fund, and provide several smart city applications, focusing on traffic management. The mayor added that the investments will also lay the groundwork for the eventual introduction of 5G services.

To improve the city’s IT infrastructure, there will be fibre deployments, and more small cells on light poles. There will be three smart city services, focused on intersection safety, traffic data, and parking space management. Verizon will also fund the provision of Verizon Connect services to the city’s vehicle fleet. The Digital Inclusion Fund, which will receive support from the operator, provides money and resources to expand internet access throughout the city.
