The report FTTH in the Netherlands 2022 describes the state of the Dutch fiber to the home market as per 31 December 2021, and provides figures on market indicators, analyzes developments at key market players and looks at the market issues which marked the period and set the stage for future development. It also includes our expectations for 2022. 

For this annual FTTH report, we conducted interviews with various market participants. Several major and new players are presented and there are brief discussions on a number of hot issues in the broadband and FTTH market.

The report is structured as follows:

  • Chapter 1: Executive summary.
  • Chapter 2: Competitive landscape. This chapter provides insights on research about the Dutch fixed broadband market, offering a comparative framework for developments in the Netherlands. 
  • Chapter 3: FTTH market development. This chapter contains analysis of the key market indicators for the Dutch fibre market. Figures are provided on the number of homes passed and homes activated. 
  • Chapter 4: In this chapter we describe the position, strategy and most important developments at key network owners, including KPN NetwerkNL, Delta Fiber Netwerk, E-Fiber, Open Dutch Fiber and Glaspoort. 
  • Chapter 5: Market trends and dynamics impacting the FTTH sector.
  • Chapter 6: Examining the key player strategies and also looking into plans and projects of minor players, in this chapter the market development for the next year is described.
  • Chapter 7: Facts & Figures per province.

Each year, since 2008, Telecompaper publishes its FTTH report, analyzing the Dutch fibre to the home market. Our FTTH database, called the Telecompaper FTTH Monitor, contains all local and regional FTTH projects in the Netherlands on a detailed scale.

Fibre connections grow again in the Netherlands, amid decline for copper, coax - ACM

The Dutch fibre market counted 5.05 million fibre connections (homes passed) at the end of the second quarter, an increase of 340,000 from the previous quarter, according to the latest Telecom Monitor from regulator ACM. KPN had a market share of 65-70 percent, while Delta Fiber held 15-20 percent. The market share of Open Dutch Fiber, which acquired fibre provider E-Fiber in Q2, increased to 5-10 percent from less than 5 percent in Q1.

Netherlands FTTH sector set for final record year in 2022

The FTTH market is growing quickly in the Netherlands, with a record number of homes passed in 2021 and 2020. Growth in the first half of 2022 suggests another record year, supported by the newcomers in the market and competition to reach new areas. The market progress was discussed during Telecompaper's recent webinar on the Dutch FTTH sector, with the question whether the rapid growth can continue in 2023.

T-Mobile Netherlands expands fibre footprint with Tweak takeover, E-Fiber access

T-Mobile Netherlands is expanding on the fixed broadband market with the takeover of ISP Cambrium, operating under the name Tweak. The company also announced a new agreement with network operator Open Dutch Fiber (ODF).

ODF gaat 21.000 huishoudens in Venlo-Noord aansluiten op glasvezel

In Venlo-Noord krijgen 21.000 huishoudens toegang tot internet via glasvezel van Open Dutch Fiber (ODF). T-Mobile is daarbij de eerste aanbieder op het netwerk van ODF. Naar verwachting kunnen de eerste huishoudens in 2023 gebruikmaken van internet via glasvezel met up- en downloadsnelheden tot 1 Gbps. De werkzaamheden starten in oktober in de wijken Centrum, Venlo-Noord, Zuid, Oost en het Ven. Naar verwachting kunnen de eerste huishoudens in 2023 gebruik maken van glasvezel.

Delta Netwerk starts regional campaigns in Limburg, Friesland

Delta Netwerk has launched its first two regional campaigns in Limburg and Friesland, to show residents that it is bringing fibre to the region. The campaigns are complementary to Delta's national TV campaign and local campaigns in towns and cities.

This has been the message for years at conferences and congresses, but the tone was different this year at Telecompaper's Telecom Insights 2022 event in Bussum, Netherlands. Many speakers talked about social meaning rather than hard facts.

Delta Fiber groeit door naar mijlpaal van 1 miljoen 1 Gbps huishoudens

Delta Fiber maakt bekend dat het de 1 miljoenste aansluiting op zijn netwerk is gepasseerd. Daarmee heeft 12 procent van de Nederlandse adressen toegang tot internetsnelheden van 1 Gbps via Delta Fiber. Van dit miljoen is het overgrote deel glasvezel, terwijl het oorspronkelijke netwerk in Zeeland nog voor een deel uit coax-aansluitingen bestaat. Delta Fiber wil niet zeggen hoeveel lijnen glasvezel zijn.

Zuid-Holland is sinds april de provincie met de meeste FTTH homes passed

In de loop van april is Zuid-Holland de provincie geworden met de meeste homes passed in Nederland. Met 896.000 lijnen streefde het Noord-Brabant voorbij, dat aan het eind van de maand op 892.000 uitkwam. Gelderland completeert de top drie met 793.000 homes passed. Dat blijkt uit de nieuwste data uit de Telecompaper FTTH database.

Open Dutch Fiber neemt E-Fiber over

E-Fiber maakt bekend dat het is overgenomen door Open Dutch Fiber. Daarmee wordt de huidige nummer drie in de Nederlandse FTTH-markt onderdeel van de nummer zes, gemeten in het aantal homes passed.

Open Dutch Fiber expands network footprint with acquisition of E-Fiber

Open Dutch Fiber has acquired rival E-Fiber for an undisclosed amount. E-Fiber is the third-largest FTTH operator in the Netherlands and will significantly expand the network footprint of Open Dutch Fiber, the joint venture set up by Deutsche Telekom and KKR last year.

ACM welcomes KPN, Glaspoort proposals for wholesale fibre access

Dutch operator KPN has made a new proposal for lower wholesale access rates for its fibre network. The eight-year commitment was welcomed by the regulator ACM, which had been working on a new analysis of the fixed broadband market. It will consider making KPN's offer binding, following an update of its analysis and a public consultation.

FTTH NL: delays in Midden-Groningen, ViberQ signs with Het Hogeland, campaign in Leerdam

Snel Internet Groningen announced delays in its fibre network roll-out outside Midden-Groningen. It's updating its plan and will announce the details once a new excavation permit is granted. The operator is deploying fibre wherever possible, and will use wireless or 4G connections in hard-to-reach areas.
