EU telcos join European Green Digital Coalition, to target net-zero emissions by 2040

The European Commission has teamed up with ETNO, the GSMA and numerous leading European telecommunications operators as well as 45 SMEs and startups to launch the European Green Digital Coalition at Digital Day 2021, organised by the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union. Under the EGDC, signatories pledge to ensure their companies will be climate neutral by 2040, among a number of targets and commitments.

Founding members include Telefonica, Deutsche Telecom, Ericsson, Nokia, Orange, Vodafone, Telenor, Telia, Accenture, Proximus, Liberty Global, NOS, TDC and A1 Telekom Austria. In a statement, ETNO said the founding CEOs committed to developing “standardised, credible and comparable assessment methodologies for the net impact of green digital solutions on the environment and climate in priority sectors such as energy, transport, manufacturing, agriculture and the building sector”.

It said additional companies are expected to join the coalition in the coming months and the results of their work will be presented in 2022. ETNO and the GSMA also pledged to work together with fellow digital associations GeSI, European Digital SME Alliance and DigitalEurope to coordinate the ICT sector’s participation in the EGDC.
