German ministry funds 6G research at four hubs with EUR 250 mln

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has selected four hubs to conduct research on 6G and is funding their projects with up to EUR 250 million. The research work will start in August. The Open6GHub will be coordinated by the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence, the 6G-RIC hub by the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications and Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, the 6GEM hub by the RWTH Aachen University, and the 6G-Life hub by the Technical Universities of Dresden/Munich.

Around 50 partners from science and industry are involved in the research into 6G at the four hubs. The hubs will bundle knowledge and promote 6G applications in a real environment. The 6G initiative is part of a research programme into communication systems. The BMBF will invest up to EUR 700 million in funding for research on innovative communication technologies over the next five years.

M-net expands fibre project in Munich

German regional network operator M-net said it is expanding the fibre network project in Munich with local utility company Stadtwerke Munchen (SWM). Over the coming two years, the companies will expand the network in Balanstrasse, in Laim-Mitte, in Bogenhausen-Ost and in Lerchenau-West, to supply around 20,000 additional residential and commercial buildings with gigabit connections. The buildings will be equipped with fibre, preferably with FTTH/B connection, after consultation with the owners.

Huawei aims to launch 6G products by 2030

Huawei aims to launch 6G products to the market by 2030, Global Times reported, citing chairman Xu Zhijun said. "Huawei will define 5.5G and research 6G at the same time in the next few years, he wrote in a recent book preface. However, Xu noted the shadow of geopolitical uncertainties hanging over the research and development of 6G technologies, as Huawei might still be excluded from overseas markets in 6G products.

Russian government starts research into 6G

Moscow University of ICT Technology, accountable to the Ministry of Digitisation, is seeking a contractor to carry out research into 6G and other modern wireless technologies, reports Cnews.ru. The university plans to allocate RUB 225.6 million for this purpose. The research would be into innovative wireless technologies, smart systems of antennas, and quantum communication technologies.

German ICT R&D centre Fraunhofer Fokus has confirmed its involvement in two of four planned 6G research hubs in Germany over the next four years.

Fractus and Barcelona's UPF set up 6G research chair

Fractus, a developer of internal antennas for smartphones, tablets and other IoT devices, said it has signed a three-year collaboration agreement with Barcelona's Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) to create the Tech Transfer and 6G Fractus-UPF chair. The aim is to boost research into future 6G wireless communications systems while enhancing technology transfer and educational activities, said the partners.

Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) said Germany's Technical University of Kaiserslautern (TUK) has completed what G+D calls the world's first deployment test of eSIMs on a private network. Network products from MECSware and eSIM technology from G+D are being used. Through this trial scenario, TUK demonstrates the wide flexibility of eSIM technology in private 5G environments.

South Korea to invest KRW 200 billion in 6G development by 2025

South Korea plans to invest KRW 220 billion (approximately USD 195 million) to develop and standardize 6G network technology by 2025 and conduct joint research on 6G services with the US, Yonhap news agency reports. 6G services are expected to be commercially launched in 2028.

Apple, Samsung dominate German consumer smartphone market

Almost one in five Germans is willing to spend more than EUR 600 on a smartphone from Apple or Samsung, according to a survey conducted by Verivox. Almost one in four would spend more than EUR 600 to buy an iPhone. Forty-two percent of young people under the age of 30 would spend over EUR 600 on an iPhone, and 13 percent of all Germans would pay over EUR 600 to purchase a Samsung. Brands such as Huawei, Xiaomi and Sony achieve an average of just 3 percent.

The University of Oulu has announced a cooperation by the Finnish 6G Flagship research programme with Japan's Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium. The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on mutual 6G technology cooperation at the Global Digital Summit organised by the ministry and The Nikkei.

The 5G Infrastructure Association published a new white paper outlining its vision for 6G in Europe. Input is based in part on its participation in the public-private research project 'Smart Networks and Services', under development with the European Commission. An evolution of the 5G PPP, the SNS project is expected to help develop the next generation of networks.

Russian researchers expect 6G network by 2035

6G networks could become available in Russia in 2035, reports Izvestia citing a forecast made by the Russian R&D institute NIIR and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology. Such a network would be based on new infrastructure, including use of terrestrial and satellite segments. AI technologies would be used for selecting the locations of base stations and other purposes.

Vodafone Germany said it will build a global competence centre for research, development and innovation in the city of Dresden in the state of Saxony. The centre will focus on research and development into future technologies such as 5G and 6G, as well as specific applications in the fields of autonomous driving, connected agriculture, chemistry and construction, and OpenRAN.

The German Aerospace Center has officially opened the Institute of Quantum Technologies in Ulm.
