MasMovil has contracted Goldman Sachs to analyse acquisiton opportunities in Spain and Portugal, sources close to the Spanish operator told El Confidencial. The main target is Vodafone, with whom MasMovil has been in contact for months with a view to a potential merger of the two companies. Financial sources say that talks have intensified in recent weeks and that an agreement is possible in the short term.
MasMovil's senior management said there was the possibility of “an acquisition in the Iberian peninsula in the next 12 months". Vodafone sources said that in the coming months there will be a consolidation in Spain due to the commercial war between the five main operators and the consequent fall in margins. According to industry sources, the main stumbling block is the request of Vodafone to control 60 percent of the new company, while MasMovil is asking for an equal shareholding.
