Movistar picks Alcatel-Lucent for LTE deployment in Spain
Movistar has selected Alcatel-Lucent for the deployment of its LTE network in Spain. Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will provide, deploy and operate two mobile telecommunications networks based on LTE technology. Movistar will use the LTE networks to provide 4G services, including internet connections at speeds of up to 100 Mbps. These two pilot projects will be rolled out in the coming months in Madrid and Barcelona. In the tender for the Movistar contract, Alcatel-Lucent competed against Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks, local newspaper Expansion reports, citing unnamed industry sources.

Telefonica to launch LTE network in Spain next week - report

Telefonica Espana will officially launch its LTE network next week. The mobile broadband service will initially be available in Madrid and Barcelona, to be later expanded across the country, El Economista reports, citing anonymous company sources. According to the same sources, Telefonica has selected Huawei and ZTE for its LTE network deployment and launch. In the first phase of the project, Telefonica will offer its LTE services to large corporate customers. Pricing details will be released soon.

Vodafone Spain to launch LTE services in September

Vodafone will launch 4G services based on LTE technology in Spain this month. Vodafone's 4G services will initially be available in three cities, namely Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga, Cinco Dias reports. Vodafone will initially offer 4G services to its main 30 business customers, including large corporate customers and public institutions. The company is expected to confirm the launch in an announcement on 6 September.

The Spanish Minister of Industry will launch a new mobile spectrum auction in autumn. The Spanish Ministry of Industry has raised EUR 1.65 billion from its mobile spectrum tender completed 30 July, below its initial expectations of nearly EUR 2 billion. Tender winners include Telefonica, Vodafone, Orange, as well as regional operators Ono, Jazztel, Euskaltel, R, Telecable and Telecom Castilla La Mancha. Telefonica wins 70 MHz spectrum for EUR 668 mln

Telefonica has won 5 blocks in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 2.6 GHz frequency bands in the spectrum tender held by the Spanish Ministry of Industry. Telefonica deploys 3,000 3G base stations in 900MHz band

Telefonica has deployed 3,000 UMTS base stations using the 900 MHz spectrum block won as part of Spain's recent mobile spectrum refarming process. The deployment is expected to enhance Telefonica's UMTS mobile broadband network coverage, mainly in rural areas and inside buildings. Telefonica's base station deployment project is scheduled for completion in 2013.
