Spain raises EUR 1.65 bln in mobile spectrum tender
The Spanish Ministry of Industry has raised EUR 1.65 billion from its mobile spectrum tender completed 30 July, below its initial expectations of nearly EUR 2 billion. Tender winners include Telefonica, Vodafone, Orange, as well as regional operators Ono, Jazztel, Euskaltel, R, Telecable and Telecom Castilla La Mancha. The largest operators, Movistar, Vodafone and Orange, will contribute 98.5 percent of the overall amount, or EUR 1.62 billion. The 310 MHz auctioned spectrum was freed up as a result of the GSM frequency rearrangement and the analogue broadcasting switch-off (digital dividend).

Spain pushes forward allocation of digital dividend

The Spanish government plans to make 4G services available nationwide starting from January 2014, one year earlier than initially scheduled, El Economista reports, citing Victor Calvo Sotelo, Spanish secretary of state for telecommunications. Overall, the Spanish government will invest around EUR 864.2 million for telecommunications services development, down by 23.1 percent from 2011. R wins additional spectrum in 2.6 GHz frequency band

Spanish regional cable operator R has won an additional spectrum block of 2x10 MHz (TDD) in the 2.6 GHz frequency band in the spectrum tender held by the Spanish Ministry of Industry. R will pay around EUR 297,489 for this new spectrum block. R plans to use the newly acquired spectrum to expand its mobile services offering, as well as deploy a LTE network, across the Spanish region of Galicia. The concession expires on 31 December 2030.

Telefonica wins additional 900 MHz spectrum for EUR 169 mln

Telefonica has won a block of 4.8 MHz in the 900 MHz frequency band in the second stage of the spectrum tender held by the Spanish Ministry of Industry. The cost of the spectrum block amounts to EUR 169 million and the payment will be distributed in two tranches. Telefonica will pay half the amount immediately and the remaining half by June 2012. The concession expires on 31 December 2030.

Spain launches new mobile spectrum auction

The Spanish Minister of Industry has launched a new mobile spectrum auction. The ministry is now auctioning seven spectrum blocks that have not been assigned in the tender competed on 31 July, including one block in the 900 MHz frequency band, another 10 MHz block for exploitation by a regional operator in Extremadura, and five blocks in the 2.6 GHz band.

Movistar picks Alcatel-Lucent for LTE deployment in Spain

Movistar has selected Alcatel-Lucent for the deployment of its LTE network in Spain. Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will provide, deploy and operate two mobile telecommunications networks based on LTE technology. Movistar will use the LTE networks to provide 4G services, including internet connections at speeds of up to 100 Mbps. Euskaltel wins 10 MHz spectrum in 2.6 frequency band

Spanish regional cable operator Euskaltel has won 10 MHz of spectrum in the 2.6 GHz frequency band in the spectrum tender held by the Spanish Ministry of Industry. TeleCable wins 10 MHz spectrum in Spain

Spanish regional cable operator TeleCable has won 10 MHz spectrum in the 2.6 GHz frequency band in the tender held by the Spanish Ministry of Industry.
