Sky to launch new free sports channel in UK, Ireland

Sky has announced the launch of a new sports channel called Sky Sports Mix. Launching in summer 2016, this will be available to all Sky TV customers in the UK and Ireland at no extra cost. It will give them access to a mix of live sport including football, golf from Europe and the US, international cricket and more as part of their basic subscription packages.

Customers will be able to watch regular live football from competitions including La Liga, MLS, FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifiers, as well as a select number of Premier League and Football League match. The new channel will also be used to strengthen Sky's commitment to women's sport, showing live women's golf, cricket and netball.

It will also show documentaries, sports entertainment shows and other sporting content. Sky Sports Mix will be available in the same number of Sky TV homes as Sky Sports News HQ, which has an annual reach of 17 million viewers.

Sky targets further cost cuts to offset Premier League cost

Pay-TV provider Sky reported a strong increase in annual results and said it will target further cost reductions in the coming year in order to offset the growing costs of content. Revenues for the 12 months to June rose 20 percent to GBP 11.965 billion, and operating profit was up 1 percent to GBP 977 million. Adjusted net earnings were up 13 percent to 63.1 pence, and Sky increased its dividend by 2 percent to 33.5 pence per share.

Sky Box Office to show IBF World Heavyweight fight

Sky announced that Sky Box Office will show Anthony Joshua's first defence of his IBF World Heavyweight title against Dominic Breazeale at The O2 in London on 25 June. The undercard includes a WBA Super-Middleweight Title Eliminator fight between George Groves against Martin Murray. Sky Sports viewers will also be offered an extensive schedule of support programming across its channels and digital outlets including Ringside and The Gloves Are Off.

Sky adds more kids content through new Turner deal

Sky has announced a long-term agreement with Turner to add more Turner children's shows to the Sky platform. As a result, Sky will become the exclusive home of on-demand box sets of Turner's kids shows The Amazing World of Gumball and Adventure Time. The agreement covers the Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito channels. Customers will be able to watch programmes through the recently launched Sky Kids app or the dedicated Sky Kids tile on the Sky TV homepage.

Pay-TV company Sky Deutschland is investing in the production of its own TV series, partly to compensate for the threatened loss of exclusive broadcast rights to Bundesliga football games. Sky confirmed that Sky 1's drama 'Stan Lee's Lucky Man' will return to screens in 2017. Sky announces new F1 broadcast agreement

Sky has agreed a new broadcast partnership with Formula One Management. This will see Sky Sports become the exclusive home of F1 in the UK and Ireland from 2019 to 2024, offering live coverage of all Grand Prix races. Sky, Mark Hollinger invest in Sugar Films

Sky has acquired a minority stake in independent production company Sugar Films, which has been founded by senior TV professionals Kwadjo Dajan, Narinder Minhas, Lucy Pilkington, Nav Raman and Pat Younge. Sky increases TV subscription costs

Sky will increase the cost of its TV plans by an average of GBP 2-3 per month from start-June, reports The Guardian. It will increase prices for both upgrades and TV deals, with increases of GBP 1-GBP 4.25 per month. The Complete premier package will increase by GBP 4.25 to GBP 80 a month. Sky announced that Andrew Griffith, currently Group Chief Financial Officer and MD, Commercial Businesses, will expand his responsibilities to become Group Chief Operating Officer. Sky Living acquires two new US TV shows

Sky announced that the Sky Living channel has acquired the rights to two new US dramas. These are police drama 'Shades of Blue' starring Jennifer Lopez, and the fourth series of ABC musical drama series 'Nashville'. Sky sets up VR production studio, releases first videos

Sky announced the launch of "a major new commitment" to virtual reality (VR) content. To step up the production of VR content across all its markets, Sky has created Sky VR Studio, a dedicated in-house VR production unit. Sky Italia plans to to enter the Italian movie distribution market and is in talks with several production companies, Il Sole 24 Ore reports. Sky does not however plan to compete with the market leader, state TV company Rai, with whom it is discussing TV rights, the paper said.
