Swiss operators unite in bid for sports rights
The association of Swiss fibre network operators Suissedigital announced plans to bid for live sports rights on behalf of its members. The group counts nearly 200 members serving 2.5 million customers around the country, including operators such as UPC Cablecom, Quickline and Net+. 

The group said its members offer "unbeatable" coverage for sports leagues looking to extend their pay-TV reach. No details were provided on the specific rights they target or how the costs of the rights will be shared. 

The announcement follows a major competition fine against Swisscom and its pay-TV service Teleclub last year for abusing their position in the sports rights market. Rivals such as UPC have argued that Swisscom should be forced to share the rights with other pay-TV platforms.

Swisscom extends rights to top football league

The Swisscom subsidiaries Cinetrade and pay-TV provider Teleclub have extended their rights to Switzerland's top football league for another four years, for the seasons 2017/18 to 2020/21. UPC takes over fibre-optic network in Ermatingen

Cable network operator UPC has purchased the fibre-optic cable network in Ermatingen, in the Swiss canton of Thurgau. The network was sold by Regionalantenne Ermatingen (RAE) to UPC with effect from 01 July 2016. RAE has been a UPC partner since 1989, so nothing will change for customers as a result of the sale.

Quickline reports 1st-half revenue up 8.6%

Swiss cable network group Quickline has reported revenue up 8.6 percent year-on-year to CHF 115 million for 1st-half 2016, from CHF 106 million a year earlier. Telephony customers increased by 11.7 percent to 102,800, with internet customers up 6.8 percent to 151,600. The TV customer base was down 3.3 percent year-on-year to 356,000. The number of services taken by customers reached 384,600 at end-June, up 8.4 percent from 354,900 a year earlier, driven by internet, mobile and interactive TV services.

Teleclub secures rights to broadcast NHL games

Swisscom expects to win next football rights deal

Swisscom expects to win the pay-TV rights for the Swiss football league for the new period 2017-18 to 2020-21, in cooperation with its partner Cinetrade. Swisscom CEO Urs Schaeppi said in an interview with Finanz und Wirtschaft that the company was pleased with the proposed contract. The Swiss Competition Commission has imposed a sanction of CHF 71.8 million on Swisscom and Cinetrade/Teleclub for allegedly prohibited marketing of sports content via pay-TV. According to COMCO, Swisscom and Cinetrade/Teleclub occupy a dominant market position, particularly with respect to broadcasting national football and ice hockey events, and must offer all TV platforms in Switzerland – if technically feasible – an equivalent Teleclub sport offering at non-discriminatory terms and conditions.

Swisscom TV Public service to launch on 01 June

Swisscom announced that Swisscom TV Public will be available from 01 June as an additional office with My SME Office. It enables the public broadcast of TV programmes, including in bars, restaurants, and waiting and reception areas in companies including employee spaces, such as in break rooms. Swisscom forced to end service at Basel-Mulhouse airport

Swisscom confirmed that it will switch off its mobile network at the EuroAirport in Basel-Mulhouse on 24 May after talks between mobile network operators and the French authorities ended without agreement. Swisscom operates mobile masts at the airport which broadcast using the same frequencies as those of French network operators SFR and Orange. As a result of the failed negotiations, Swiss mobile operators will no longer be able to provide a mobile signal on French soil.

Swiss cable internet, phone customer growth continues

Swiss cable association Suissedigital reported that its members won 37,400 broadband and 93,500 telephony subscribers over the 12 months to March, offsetting a 4.8-percent decline in TV subscribers. Suissedigital's members saw solid growth in the telephony segment, where 40,600 (+6%) subscribers were added in fixed and 52,900 (+100%) to the mobile segment. Customer growth was also generated in broadband internet, where the subscriber numbers rose by 3.2 percent to 1,217,400.

Quickline adds new partner to network

Switzerland's Quickline Group has added a new partner to its network, cetoday.ch reports. Co-operative Licht und Kraftwerke Glattfelden (LKW) has joined the network, adding 1,700 households. LKW operates around the Zurich airport area. As a result, the Quickline partner network increases to 25 partners with more than 400,000 homes nationwide.
